Erasmus Experience in Paris, France by Şiva
Why did you choose to go to Paris, France?
I've studied at a French high school in my home country, so I actually learnt a lot about the french culture before even getting here. I chose Paris since I know the language and the culture and universities such as Sorbonne are known and appreciated worldwide. Besides who doesn't want to study in this beautiful city?
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I receive money from the French government for rent help, about 200€ monthly. I paid 400€ for my education including the social security.
What is the student lifestyle like in Paris?
I've been here for only 3 months but the students are generally friendly, though since it's university you don't always see the same person. I think that French is a little "cool" when it comes to studying, there's few people who show up for the lectures. And beware, the ones who do attend to them, they probably won't share their notes with you even though they seem friendly.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Paris to other students?
Honestly if you have the budget and patience for it yes. If you don't know to speak French even just a little, then absolutely not. A lot of people can't speak English here. The myth about French not speaking any language but their own is true.
What is the food like?
Amazing. All the bistros and cafés have extremely good food, no need to search for famous ones. Just go and eat at the nearest.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Paris?
It's really hard to find accommodation in Paris, start searching early and get yourself ready for high numbers. It could be a good idea to check around Paris as well, like Montrouge, Ivry sur Seine etc. Those places are outside Paris but just near it and they still have metro lines.
How much does it cost to live in Paris?
I pay 960 for rent, living in a 20m² studio in a private student housing, 13e district Paris. And spend up to 200-250 € for groceries, since I cook my own meals. And add another 100-200 € for personal costs such as drinks grabbed with friends or a little shopping...
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Paris from your city?
I'm Turkish so the only way is to travel via plane.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Paris?
There are many clubs especially near Champs élysées and Arc de Triomphe, if you like to dress up and be fancy... You need to have reservations beforehand though. Otherwise, I strongly recommend trying new bars, for example small ones in Marais district. French actually prefer going out to bars rather than clubs.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Paris?
Margherita St Germain in Odeon, for great Italian food, Le Chat Noir in Montmartre and Le Petit Chatelet for traditional French cuisine, a bit pricey though.
