Erasmus Experience in Paris, France by Karolina
Why did you choose to go to Paris, France?
Because it's a very well known and respected city and is said to have a good level of education. Also because there are many things to do and see there.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I received around 240 euros each month for the period of five months.
What is the student lifestyle like in Paris?
I can only talk about exchange students' lifestyle - many parties, not much studying.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Paris to other students?
The city is very interesting, though it is also expensive as hell - if you have a lot of money you'll have great time there. Otherwise you'll learn how to plan your spendings to the last cent... Seriously speaking, Paris is said to be the capital of culture, fashion etc., but if you spend more than one week there you may become disappointed, it has as many flaws as any other big city.
What is the food like?
I haven't really tried typical French food. You can find international food anywhere.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Paris?
Expensive. I changed flats three times, I was always sharing room/floor with other people and it cost me around 300 euros a month. If you want to have a studio or a room for yourself, prepare for a cost of around 800-1000 euros per month.
How much does it cost to live in Paris?
It depends how you manage your budget. Going out is pretty expensive (20 euros to get into a club, another 20 for a good drink), getting around the city as well (monthly ticket - 60 euros).
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available in the University?
I studied at ISC Paris School of Management, they do offer French courses, you will not become and expert, but you at least you may learn to buy a coffe or ask how to get somewhere. French is quite difficult, prepare for that.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Paris?
Duplex and Le Players are two most economical and at the same time the most international clubs in Paris. You'll have fun there.
Is there any other advice that you could give to future students who are going to Paris?
Start looking for accomodation long before getting to Paris - it really may turn out to be very difficult to find something.
