Erasmus Experience in Paris, France
Why did you choose to go to Paris, France?
Because I fell in love with the city the first time I visited, so when I was given the opportunity to do my diploma there, I didn't think twice.
How long did your grant last for and how much did you receive?
The Erasmus grant they give in Catalonia is 100 euros a month, for nine months. Fortunately I also had the help of the CAF (accommodation assistance from the French state) which added another 100 euros a month. Anyway, 200 euros in Paris doesn't get you very far...
What's the student atmosphere like in Paris?
There are loads of options for students in Paris, for those who like to work hard, play hard, or both. Lots of areas of bars, clubs, theatres, cinemas, shopping centres.... Everything a big city could possibly offer, and on top of that the unique Parisian cultural offerings (Haussmann architecture, monuments, museums... ).
Would you recommend the University of Paris to other students?
Yes! It's not too different from Spain, nor is the culture too much of a shock.... but if you want to explore, get out of your comfort zone and you like French, it's a great opportunity!
What's the cuisine like?
To be honest I'm not the best person to ask, because although I was living in France, I still ate mostly Spanish food... I didn't really come across any great gastronomic differences.
How did you find accommodation?
Through my university in Paris, who put us in contact with an agency which manages student residences (Egide), always at a more expensive price, but you can't always win!
What about the cost of accommodation? And the cost of living?
Very expensive! It didn't stop me from living my life as usual, but I definitely spent more than I spend in Spain. The accommodation is very expensive in general, and the shops and restaurants too, but at least you can find cheap supermarkets...
What about the language? Did you attend any course at the University?
The language was fine because I love languages and learn very quickly. In my uni there was also a French course for foreigners to resolve any doubts that came up, and perfect our language.
What's the cheapest way of getting to Paris?
By plane! The train is really expensive and takes ages, it's not worth it......
Where do you recommend for going out?
Duplex, Show Case, the St Michel area, and the Rue Mouffetard area too!
Any dining recommendations?
Chez Clement! Expensive but amazing! I love the one in St Michel, and also Hipopotamus! Cheaper and still great! And the desserts...!
What about cultural excursions?
All of them! The Louvre, Montmartre with the Sacre Coeur, around the Pantheaon, and the Luxembourg Gardens.... The bridges on the Seine, the Ile de St Louis... and of course the Notre Dame and the Eiffel Tower.
Any advice for future students in Paris?
I think I've said it all! But the most important thing is to find an opening in a group of French friends, and not stay stuck to your Spanish friends. Although it may be easier and good fun to go out with Spanish people, you don't properly get to know the French culture, or the language, or the little spots that only the Parisians know about...
