Erasmus Experience in Paris, France

Why did you choose Paris, France?

I study Spanish and French law, and my university in Madrid has a link exclusively with Parisian universities.

How long did you stay for? How much money did you receive as a grant?

The grant lasted for four months, and I initially received 2, 000 euros, but after that no more.

What's the student atmosphere like?

The French are very studious and the universities are quite demanding, so if you're planning on coming to Paris just for a good time and to get through without studying hard, then this is not the right place for you.

On the other hand, it's a very cosmopolitan city, full of students from different countries and cultures, although maybe its size makes it a bit difficult to make a lot of friends or get to know many people.

Would you recommend the city and the university to other students?

It depends on the intention you arrive with. If you come to learn and study and embrace the academic side, then Paris is undoubtedly a good option. What's more, it's a beautiful city, full of art, culture and magical corners. On the other hand, I was surprised to find a city quite different from how it is usually portrayed. It's a very fun city, full of life. However, if you'd rather drink and go out all the time, perhaps a smaller university city would be better. As well as being quite big, it's also quite expensive which makes going out a bit more tricky.

What's the cuisine like?

The food in restaurants is good but very expensive. The supermarkets are well-priced, there are a few more expensive ones which are more conveniently located.

Was it difficult finding accommodation in Paris?

I found it very difficult. I would really recommend residences over flats. The flats are really old and really expensive, the value for money is non-existent. I'm in a flat with two friends, which took us over a month to find. We pay 1, 800 euros a month and we don't even have proper beds, just sofa beds, and it's old and dirty. Most of my friends have even more expensive flats and the same conditions. So, unless you're a millionaire, I'd 100% recommend a residence.

How expensive was living in Paris?

Life is very expensive - 1, 000 a month for accommodation, leisure, food and transport.

How was the language? Did you attend any course at the university?

I've studied French at school from being young so it wasn't a problem.

What's the cheapest way of getting to Paris from your city?

By plane.

Where would you recommend in terms of nightlife?

There are lots of bars and clubs. For girls, definitely BDD on a Thursday.

What about cultural excursions?

The best city in the world. It's just beautiful wherever you look. Magical.

Any advice you'd give future students in Paris?

Be patient. The best things take a while to happen.
