Experience in Palma, Spain by Nadia
What's it like living in Palma? Do you recommend it? How is it?
To me, Palma de Mallorca is a very beautiful city and it somewhere you have to visit at least once in your lifetime. Although, in order to enjoy it to the maximum and to be ale to visit various places and try the different foods you will need some money. The people there are a little closed-off, yet you can learn lots of things about their diverse culture. You've also got both beaches and mountains which are easy to get to, which is something special.

How is student life in Palma?
It is quite feasible if you know Mallorcan, since a lot of the students who are in your classes come from nearby towns, and Mallorcan is not very difficult to learn. The Erasmus programme is very well organised, making it easy for people to get to know one another.

How much does it cost to live in Palma?
It's not a very cheap city, although not the most expensive either. I would say that a student could get by on about 400 euros a month.

Was it hard to find accommodation in Palma? Do you have any advice?
I've lived in Palma since I was born, so it hasn't been complicated for me, but there are numerous accommodation options and rooms available to rent. I don't think finding accommodation is a problem here.
How's the country's food? What are your favourite dishes?
The food is spectacular, in truth the gastronomy is very varied and delicious. You can find the island's traditional dishes, such as tumbet (baked vegetables with olive oil), frit mallorquí (traditional Mallorcan dish made using lamb or pork, potato, onions and peppers), sobrasada (cured sausage) and ensaimada (pastry made using lard).

What places do you recommend visiting in Palma?
The historic centre is pretty but I especially recommend visiting the Serra de Tramuntana world heritage site and all of the island's beaches and coves.

What about eating out in Palma? Can you tell us your favourite places?
Really this depends on your individual preferences, there are loads of places which offer good-quality Mallorcan food.
What places do you recommend for a night out in Palma?
The most lively place is along the promenade, which is where the majority of the young people hang out.
Do you have any advice you'd like to give to students coming to Palma?
Try to adapt to the people and their culture, there is also a large foreign population. Just enjoy it.
