Erasmus Experience in Palma de Mallorca, Spain by Maurice
Why did you choose to go to Palma de Mallorca, Spain?
I always wanted to go abroad to Spain. I chose Palma because it's a beautiful island and the vibe is different then on the mainland, different in a good way!
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I received 210 euros a month during my six month stay here in Palma.
What is the student lifestyle like in Palma de Mallorca?
It's very relaxed. The classes aren't hard and I have a lot of free time to spent with my friends to discover the island and relax on the beach.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Palma de Mallorca to other students?
I recommend Palma for sure! I fell in love with the city and the island. But what you need to keep in mind is that the University is very messy. If you really want your Erasmus time to add value to your study, you might consider a university with better arrangements and education on a higher level. I personally like it that school isn't a big deal because I can enjoy my Erasmus to the fullest. I have time to meet new people, party a lot and relax at the beach. But again it won't add much value to my study and knowledge.
What is the food like?
There are so much restaurants and bars with tapas. And there's almost always good. Beside that there are of course a lot of restaurants offering other kind of meals! And a big plus: it's most of the time cheap!
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Palma de Mallorca?
It wasn't hard to find a room. I recommend the website Idealista or AirBnb.
How much does it cost to live in Palma de Mallorca?
The average for rent is around 300-400 Euro a month. Beside that you can live pretty cheap. The supermarkets aren't expensive and as I said before, you can eat in town for a cheap price. The transport is also not expensive, although it is a lot of paperwork to get your residents card with discount, after you got it, you travel for 0, 45€ on every bus line.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
The language is a bit hard in the beginning. Especially because the Catalan dialect is spoken a lot here so a lot of people have a dialect in their language. There is a language course available at every level (A1, A2 etc. ).
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Palma de Mallorca from your city?
Of course this is by plane.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Palma de Mallorca?
To go out, you have to go to Paseo maritimo. This is just outside the center and there are several clubs and bars which are open all night!
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Palma de Mallorca?
If you want cheap bocadillos, you should go to 100 Montaditos at Plaza de España. On Sundays its only 0, 50€ for each bocadillo! I know 2 good restaurants which are my favourites in town. Born 8 at Paseo del born and Buscando el norte near to Plaza de España. Although Buscando el norte is a bit more expensive then average in Palma but very good.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Palma city center of course, especially the old town with the Cathedral. Then there is Valldemossa, near the University. I also been to Sóller, which is also great.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Palma de Mallorca in the future?
Rent a room near Plaza de España. Everyone lives near to it and it's easy to go to school from this point. Ask the owner of the house to give you a copy of the contract, you need this to get registered in Palma and get the bus card with student discount. One other advice : Just go to Palma! It's great, I'm here for 2 months now and I love it.
