Erasmus Experience in Palma de Mallorca, Spain by Katarzyna

Why did I choose to go to Palma de Mallorca, Spain?

I actually didn't choose Palma as my first option for Erasmus. I chose Valencia but however, together with a friend we decided to go to Palma so I ended up going there. This city and the whole Balearic region is so much different from the place I live in, so I don't regret at all going to Palma.

How much are the living costs in Palma de Mallorca?

You should expect monthly renting expenses of approximately 250-300 euros excl. additional costs (electricity, heating, water). I approximately spent the same amount for food and leisure activities such as going out. All together my monthly expenses were approximately 500 euros per month. I received with my scholarship approximately 250 euros per month and I received 90% of it before I arrived in Palma. So if you also have a scholarship, be prepared to have extra money to cover expenses which exceed your monthly scholarship.

What is the student lifestyle like in Palma de Mallorca?

Studying at the UIB is a pleasant experience. The university campus is quite big, with all the necessary facilities. There is a Facebook group for all Erasmus students from different exchange programs so the student life is very active and international. Students organise integration parties all few days a week.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Palma de Mallorca to other students?

Yes, definitely.

What is the food like?

Variety of delicious sea food, fresh fruits and vegetables and a lot of great restaurants that offer not only traditional Spanish food.

You can find your accommodation easily on the internet. If you are already in Spain when searching for an accommodation, I would recommend to firstly buy a spanish SIM-card so that you are able to get in contact with the landlords.

How difficult is the language? Are there any language courses available at the university?

Spanish language is quite easy to learn. There is special language course for all the internationals coming to study at UIB. It is conducted by great teachers and everybody has to take Spanish test upon arrival in order to divide students into different levels.

What's the easiest way to travel to Palma de Mallorca?

By plane. However, you could also travel by ferrie.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Palma de Mallorca?

I would recommend starting in one of the tapas bars or pubs and then move on to Paseo Maritimo, which is the place to party in Palma. All the clubs and party are right there in one place. There's a bus going to and from Paseo all night.

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Palma de Mallorca?

For eating I recommend tapas bars around Plaza de España or Plaza de la Drassana. There is a lot of good sushi restaurants. But the best places are located in the tiny streets of Palma where you can try amazing cafe or have some tapas. Palma's most famous cafe place is chain called Cappucinos which is always crowded, has delicious menu and good wifi. Ca'n Joan De S'aigo is one of the oldest cafes in Palma. It has great climate and serves delicious ice creams and pastries.

Which cultural landmarks should you visit?

The cathedral, Castell de Bellver, Biblioteca Ramon Llull, Es Baluard Museum of Modern Art.

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Palma de Mallorca in the future?

Upon arrival you don't have to take a taxi which costs around 20 euros to get you to the city centre. You can take the bus which says Aeropuerto. It runs every 20 minutes and costs only 2. 50 euros. There is a lot of accommodation offers on the university website and they are very often posted by the students so it's safe and great idea to make friends with local students. Even if you don't find the apartment before arriving in Palma, there's plenty of rooms to rent. Check the ads at the uni board. Palma is great, fun, and always great weather. Have fun!
