Experience in Novi Sad, Serbia by Aleksandar

What is it like to live in Novi Sad? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

First thought that comes to my mind when I think about Novi Sad, is that it is perfect city for living because everything is so close and you can reach everything by foot, however , it has everything that one student needs.Life in this city is still calm, in comparison to Belgrade which i prefer, so I would definetely recommend it to everyone that are keen to easy going life, with really great nightlife.

What is the student lifestyle like in Novi Sad?

It is the same for the student lifestyle, it is really easy going. All the faculties are situated in one place, in Liman 1 part of the city, except for the medicine and pharmacalogical faculty.Students have an option to eat in student dinning restaurants really cheap, the food quality is pretty good.Personaly, for me the negative side is that studying on Serbian faculties is not that easy, but I think that domestic profesors are more easy going for foreign students.

How much does it cost to live in Novi Sad?

Well it depends in which part of the city you want to live.If you want to live on Grbavica(which i prefer),Centre, Liman 1,2,3,4 , in a studio the costs are around 220 with all bills included, even the internet, so its pretty cheap. Moreover, if you find for instance an apartment for 3 persons, the costs are 100 euros per person. The other parts of city are even cheaper, like Detelinara, Novo Naselje,etc...
When we are talking about expesnes for living, I would say that one person with 300 euros can live really comfortable, especially if you eat in faculty restarant. For instance, beer in a club costs from1,70 to 2,20 euros, pljeskavica(serbian type of burger, raelly nice) costs 1.50.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Novi Sad? Is there any advice you can give?

If you search on time it is not difficult.I would recommend to everyone to find a flat in Grbavica(most of the students live there) part of the city, it is close to the university and city centre where everytinh is happening. My advice would be dont make parties in apartments after 11 in the evening, local people really dont approve it, so you can warm up in the aparment until 11 and after that go to the city and have fun :)

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

The food is just fabulous.Novi Sad as capital of the region Vojvodina is centre of multculturality. So you can try all kind of dishes, that are tradionaly made by Serbian, Hungarian or Slovakian people. You should definetly try Sarma, Gulas, Cevapi, Pljeskavica,Paprikas,Fish soup(riblja corba),etc.

What places would you recommend visiting in Novi Sad?

I would recommend everyone to visit Petrovaradinska fortress, which is just 15 minutes from city centre by foot.City centre is really beautiful.

Is it good to eat out in Novi Sad? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Eating out is so popular in Novi Sad,due to the variety of food that you find on street that are working 0-24h.Most favourite places are with Serbian barbecue, which is really delicious. If you want to eat in a restaraunt which is a bit expensier, I recommend you to go to Plava Frajla restaraunt, which has delicious barbecue, but also has all famous dishes made in Vojvodina(Novi Sad), the other options would be Balkan Express,Aqua Doria which is on the river front. If you are looking for some cheaper alternative, for barbecue , I recommend Bubi grill,Biber or Sarajevski cevap.Serbian pizza is also great, best places for pizza are Savoca restaurant and pizzeria Ciao. There are also a lot of places that offer Burgers,Mexican food, Chinese, food,etc...

Is the nightlife good in Novi Sad? Where is good to go?

Novi Sad has really great nightlife. Most of the students go to street Laze Teleckog(city centre), where you can find around 15 cafes, that offer all kind of music, from domestic(zabavnjaci), rock to house music. In laze Teleckog i prefer cafe Lazino tele. Moreover,in Zmaj Jovina street that is situated also in the city centre, there is a club called Imperija, and if you want to cointinue partying after 3 am , you should go there , it worksu until 6,7.Ofcourse that place is suitable for people that listen to the underground music. The same undergorund place is club called The End, and it is located on Sajmiste, it is around 15 minutes by foot from city centre. Moreover, in city centre there is club Giardino, that is on the top of the building, but it is always crowdy, you should get an reservation before going there. In the summer, there are open air parties on the Dunav river front, which are held in Diskont club,The End summer balcony(techno music clubs), or Dva Galeba,Kristal(domestic music). Also there are few places to go out on the Petrovaradinska fotress, which work until the morning.

What advice would you give future students heading to Novi Sad?

I would advice everyone to come to Novi Sad, because city is really beautiful and calm, but on other hand really live.People are really nice, all the students are open to talk with foreign students, most of them speak English, so you wont have a problem in communication.
