Erasmus Experience in Nicosia, Cyprus by Ciaran
Why did you choose to go to Nicosia, Cyprus?
I organised a research internship for 2 months by email professors around universities from cyprus
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I received the erasmus internship grant for the 2 months, something like 360 euro per month
What is the student lifestyle like in Nicosia?
Very fun, I'd recommend living in student dorms - I was in a flat with 10 erasmus students on each floor. There was a lot of drinking and it was a great way to make friends. There are plenty of erasmus events, just join up all the Facebook pages and there will be beach trips, beer pong and weekly events
Would you recommend the city and the University of Nicosia to other students?
Yes definitely
What is the food like?
Food is amazing, in Nicosia you can try all the Greek foods and it's possible to cross the border to find some cheap Turkish places too. Best food ever
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Nicosia?
No I emailed and fb messaged a lot of people
How much does it cost to live in Nicosia?
Food maybe 50 euro per week
Partying maybe 20 to 30 per week
Accommodation
300 to 500 per month
Touristy things, beach trips and sightseeing
Maybe 20 to 30 euro per week
Transport - depends on your situation butmonthly bus cards can be cheap. Service isn't good in comparison to other European countries
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
If you spend time with other international students, you can speak your own language and mostly English. Greek is meant to be very difficult to learn
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Nicosia from your city?
Ryanair flights
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Nicosia?
Check fb for events! There's outdoor parties, techno and bar events
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Nicosia?
Try to find a mezze place to try once - 30 different Greek courses. There's also really good Greek meat kebab, fries and Mediterranean veg platters - there's one particular restaurant that is really well reviewed if you Google it
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Beaches, famigusta the abandoned city, try to really explore all of the north side of the city. Try a Turkish bath and search for scenic views in paphos and aiya napa
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Nicosia in the future?
Have fun, meet as many international people as possible! Just focus on passing college and spend as much time possible having fun and getting out of your comfort zone. Cyprus is amazing ?
