Experience in New York, United States, by Robert S
What is it like to live in New York? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
NYC is an extremely lively and versatile city. There is so much to do, for everyone and at any time of the day. Depending on where you live in the city you have different experiences. Obviously living in Staten Island offers a completely different outlook than the other boroughs. There is more of an Italian presence there and is a lot quieter than the rest of the city.
Queens and Brooklyn offer a lot of various cultures and things to do such as museums, stadiums and other touristy stuff that can't fit in Manhattan.
Manhattan is like no other place : massive building, people from every walk of life, something to eat or do on every block, and many things to see, from Time Squares to Hell's Kitchen to Broadway and, of course, relaxing in Central Park. It takes some getting used to to live there. It is extremely fast paced, overly crowded and the people are very bold!
What is the student lifestyle like in New York?
Student life is much different than in other states as the campuses in the city itself aren't huge. There are some in other boroughs that offer that typical campus life. Going to school here is like going to work.
How much does it cost to live in New York?
A lot and for very little space in Manhattan. You can venture into Brooklyn, Bronx or Queens for slightly cheaper price and slightly bigger space.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in New York? Is there any advice you can give?
It can be as they may ask a lot for the deposit. Check with your school as they will usually have information and places to look.
What is the food like? What are your favorite dishes?
There are too many to describe one. It's great but can be pricey. You have to get pizza (not from Domino's, Pizza Hut or Papa Johns), Chinese, and a street hot dog.
What places would you recommend visiting in New York?
- Times Square
- Central Park
- MOMA
- Statue of Liberty
- Empire State Building
- Rockfeller Center
- Other boroughs: Queens, Brooklyn, Bronx and Staten Island.
Is it good to eat out in New York? Can you tell us your favorite spots?
Eating out in NY is always fun, but can be expensive. Dallas BBQs is a very popular spot. You have to hit up the little pizza shops and Chinese food is the best! I also love The Cheesecake Factory.
Is the nightlife good in New York? Where is good to go?
Nightlife is great. Places close very late, usually between 3 and 6 in the morning. There is a spot for everyone: jazz lovers, reggae, pop music, etc.; for straight, gay, male or female, old or young. Depends on your interest.
What advice would you give future students heading to New York?
Be prepare for a slight culture shock. Have somewhat of a financial backing. Always easier if you know someone or can find a roommate. The closer to Manhattan the more money. Winters can be cold!
