Experience in Napoli, Italy by Pradeepa
What is it like to live in Nápoles? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Napoli from my personal experience is a good city to live in. In terms of law, people can freely smoke and drink in the streets and in Piazzas. One thing that I found surprising is the free circulation of motorcycles in Napoli. People ride them with no helmets on, and especially in the historical centre you see teenagers riding motorcycles with their friends. There are many soo many historical sites to visit and enjoy. You need to be careful when you visit the city centre called (Piazza Garibaldi) due to some locals trying to trick tourist's into buying things play cards.
What is the student lifestyle like in Nápoles?
The majority of international students are Erasmus, from Spain, South America, etc. However, every now and then you find students who are non-EU like me. There are various student clubs such as Erasmus and so on. You can join them in order to attend parties, hangouts, etc.
How much does it cost to live in Nápoles?
At Napoli the cost of living is very economical compared to other cities in Italy, but it's advisable to buy the weekly necessities from the MD-supermarket located at Piazza Garibaldi and cook your food at home instead of eating out.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Nápoles? Is there any advice you can give?
No, it is not difficult to find accommodation, I personally found my accommodation by using a newspaper called Bric-Brac and there's a section with accommodation for students. Or-else you can always go for a stroll from Piazza Bellini and walk down until you reach Via Mezzocannone where you find thousands of adverts of apartments/rooms for rent pasted on walls.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Obviously basic south Italian dishes are available at any restaurant, but there are also Japanese. Chinese, Indian, Srilankan and also Mediterranean Restaurants located close to the historical centre. My favourite dishes are Pasta penna with pisselli, Lasagne, etc. My favourite pizza is the Doppio mozzarella made by Pizzeria DaMatteo found between Piazza quattro Palazzi and the Central Station.
What places would you recommend visiting in Nápoles?
Mount Vesuvious, Pompei, Castel dell'Ovo, Palazzo Reale, Mount Capodimonte, Capodimonte Park, San-Paolo Stadium, Via Toledo.
Is it good to eat out in Nápoles? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Yes, of course:
- Pizzeria Di Matteo.
- Pizzeria Sorbillo.
- Pizzeria Porta Alba, etc.
Is the nightlife good in Nápoles? Where is good to go?
Of course! Club Dual-Beat, Platinum Luxury Club, Galleria 19 (not that good).
What advice would you give future students heading to Nápoles?
You should find accommodation before you come. It's always advisable to visit places and select if it's according to your tastes. Plus you have a better chance on finding good prices. Regarding universities one can never be sure regarding the programmes or courses until he/she finds out for themselves but the Student secretaries are very helpful in these situations.
