Erasmus Experience in Napoli, Italy by Gül
Why did you choose to go to Naples, Italy?
My studies was about food and Napoli is one of the most famous cities and it is known for its cuisine.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
Mine is just one semester. But one of my friends is going to extend his Erasmus for the second semester also. The money they gave me was 500 € per month.
What is the student lifestyle like in Naples?
The timetable is not busy. I have to go to the school just 3 days. But the people in Napoli are very relaxed. I mean if you want to do something or ask a question you have to be patient. Also talking to your teacher, you can't take the answer you need easily...
Would you recommend the city and the University of Naples to other students?
If they want to live a peaceful Erasmus no I won't recommend. Because Napoli is not like a European city. It is also different from the cities which are in Italy. But it is not a bad thing I think. You get used to it easily. The traffic, the people who yell at the streets... If you want to experience a different lifestyle then yes, I recommend Napoli...
What is the food like?
There are pizzas everywhere! It is like a dream and they are also cheap. I also eat pizza in different cities and countries but Napoli was the best! In addition to pizza, pasta is an important meal for Italians. Our lunch was always pasta with different ingredients. And the best part for me is the coffee. I didn't drink a coffee like this before. Although the portions are small, it is enough for you to wake up or enjoy.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Naples?
You have to start searching for an accommodation early. Otherwise, the best places will be already rented. I'm living in a small house with two Italian girls. My room is a single room so I stay on my own and I pay for this 300 €. More or less the prices are the same.
How much does it cost to live in Naples?
Firstly you have to count your rent like 300 € because otherwise, you have to live in bad places. When you add other things like shopping, food, going out, etc. it can be like 500€ total per month.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
If you know some Spanish or Frech yes it is easy but if you don't it can be a little difficult for you. Yes, there are some courses available, you can register them as it would be beneficial.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Naples from your city?
I'm from İzmir, Turkey. To arrive to Napoli, I had to fly to İstanbul first. Then you can directly fly to Napoli. This the best way because other solutions will be hard with your luggage.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Naples?
There is a place called Piazza Bellini. All Erasmus students go there to party. There are lots of organizations and parties.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Naples?
If you don't want to party but just a dinner you can go to Sorbillo at Via di Tribunali. It is opening at 19:00 and has very delicious pizzas. But you have to arrive there earlier because it is really crowded. Also, there is a place called Perfect in Corso Umberto. It is one of my favorite restaurants.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
It is very near to Pompeii. And also when you pass Pompeii there is a place called Sorrento. You can go to the Amalfi Coast from there. The view is really magnificent. Also, there is a place called Caserta. There is a palace and a huge gorgeous garden.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Naples in the future?
You have to research about the school and the city very much. And if you have some opportunities to learn their language you should learn. Otherwise, communication will be a problem. And you should travel not only study. This is a chance for you to improve yourself in many ways. Just use your chance well and have fun...
