Erasmus Experience in Maribor, Slovenia by Emmanuel
Why did you choose to go to Maribor, Slovenia?
Because it isn't a well-known country, however, it has a lot of stuff to give to the one who goes there.
What is the student lifestyle like in Maribor?
You don't have so many classes per week so you have enough free time to travel in the neighbour countries (Slovenia is really close to many countries so it is a good opportunity to visit them all).
The office of erasmus student is really skilled and organized because every week there is some meeting in a coffee to learn a new language or teach your mother tongue; a party in a club; ice skate; pool; cinema; and so on. Moreover, every month one road trip is organized in Slovenia or in the country all around, the prices are good value for money.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Maribor to other students?
I recommend you either Maribor, either Ljubjana because both of them are the biggest city in Slovenia and a lot of Erasmus people goes to those cities.
What is the food like?
Typical slovenian food is not so good (even slovenian people say that) but they eat a lot of bosnian food which is really tasty, and particularly cevapcici (it is like a sausage)
One good point for student is that you can eat for a few euros (2 to 4) with coupons (it is a discount in some restaurant). You will have a starter, main dish and a dessert (the proportions and the quality of the food depend on the restaurant but generally it is really good).
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Maribor?
Not so much, accommodations are really accessible compared to France. Here I pay 200 euros per month in the center of Maribor and it is really a good place to live in but you will pay less if you want to live in a dorm, it will be more like 100 euros per month.
How much does it cost to live in Maribor?
Not so much as well, as I said earlier you can eat in restaurant for 3 euros in average with coupons and the accommodation is not so expensive. In addition alcohol is cheaper and clubs are almost all free. Travel is not so expensive as well if you go with Erasmus office (approximately 100 euro per trip) but even by your own.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
There are some language courses if you want to learn slovenian, but slovenian is really a difficult language, so it's up to you.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Maribor from your city?
By bus it is less than 100 euro but it is 20 hours of bus from my city whereas by plane is more expensive (around 200 euros) but it is quicker, the only problem is that you will have to land in Croatia in Zagreb and take the bus to Maribor.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Maribor?
Nana, Leon, Rozmarin, Mango...
