Visiting Bad Durkheim - Wurstmarkt
Bad Durkheim is home to the biggest wine festival in the world for two weekends in September, and although perhaps not as famous as Oktoberfest, it's definitely worth going to!
Getting there
You can get to Bad Durkheim via train or tram. It's about a 45 minute journey either way, but you can get there for free with your semester ticket! If not, it's the standard 2.50 Euros for a single trip, so 5 Euros to get there and back.
It's about a ten minute walk from where the tram or train stops to where the festival itself is, but it's pretty easy to find if you just follow the crowds!
Entry to the festival is free; you just have to get your bag searched on entry. Be aware that you can't take alcohol into the festival grounds, so finish your drink before you get there or wait until you're inside to start drinking!
Food and drink
You're kind of spoiled for choice when it comes to food and drink. There was a huge variety of different food stalls selling things like wursts, chips, waffles, crepes etc. There were also bars with plenty of seating areas and a couple of big tents where you could eat, drink, and listen to live music.
Entertainment
There's a massive variety of stuff to do when you're there. A ferris wheel, rollercoaster, other fairground rides, plenty of food and drink, live music, loads of craft stalls and even fireworks.
The grounds themselves are massive, so I'm sure there's probably even more stuff going on that I didn't see while I was there! The website has a lot of good information on it, so it's worth checking out what's going on before you go.
Enjoy!
