Erasmus Experience in Mannheim, Germany by Tananda
Why did you choose to go to Mannheim, Germany?
I chose Mannheim mostly for the exceptional school, but I am staying here because I have made connections with wonderful people and love this quaint city.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
I do not have a scholarship. I came here with all my own money, but I was able to obtain a job!
What is the student lifestyle like in Mannheim?
It's hard work, but there is a healthy balance of work and play.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Mannheim to other students?
Yes. If someone was choosing between Mannheim and another university with similar academics I would recommend Mannheim.
What is the food like?
The food is cheap and good! Find the right grocery store and you're in business. Plus there is a farmer's market that comes in 3 days a week.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Mannheim?
I was very lucky and had a friend who already lived here.
How much does it cost to live in Mannheim?
It's getting more expensive, but students always get a discount and you can always live in the cities surrounding. The public transport is really good.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
The language is difficult, but there are free courses offered.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Mannheim from your city?
I live in Mannheim itself, but with a student ticket (you buy at the beginning of the semester), it is easy to travel by train and tram.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Mannheim?
Jungbusch is always a fun scene and during December there are three lovely Christmas markets.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Mannheim?
I haven't been to many restaurants, but there are some great Indian food spots to try!
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
The bike was invented in Mannheim which is wonderful to see and there is a place called Luisenpark which is a great place to spend a day. It is really nice with beautiful scenery, live animals, plant exhibits, and even a butterfly room!
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Mannheim in the future?
Germany can be difficult at first with all of the paperwork you need to in order to get your visa and register and the language barrier, but it is worth coming here if you're looking for a new adventure and a good education.
