Schlossfest

Mannheimer Schlossfest is an event held at the university at the start of September. It's a Music, Arts and Science festival, and is definitely worth checking out if you can (especially as it's free entry!). 

During the day time there are various family-friendly events as part of a science programme, and then from 6pm onwards alcohol is served and it becomes more of a party atmosphere.

There are various concerts going on, in the Ehrenhof, EO cafe, and the university church which are all free to attend. It's a nice atmosphere being able to wander around and listen to all the different bands and musicians playing. There's quite a lot of outdoor seating available too so you can just sit and hang out with friends and listen to the music.

If you buy a ticket in advance, it's possible to go up to the rooftop terrace of the palace. Unfortunately, my friends and I didn't manage to do this but I imagine the views are fantastic, especially when it starts to get dark!

As well as music, there's also various food and drink stands. The drinks were expensive, unfortunately, but the food wasn't bad value for money! They had crepes, burgers and hotdogs, chips, waffles, pizza and more, all dotted around the Ehrenhof. 

Towards the end of the evening, there's a huge fireworks display which is pretty impressive. At that point, the party moves to the Schneckenhof (which you'll need a ticket for), and I believe there's an afterparty in one of the clubs too!

Going and getting some food and listening to the music is a really nice way to spend an evening, but if you're planning on going to the parties afterwards I wouldn't recommend getting there until at least 8 ish when things start to liven up a bit.

A great way to get the semester started and spend some time with new friends!
