Experience in Mannheim, Germany by Catren
What is it like to live in Mannheim? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Mannheim is a small city, teaming with life, I would recommend it, there are many different cultures crammed into a small area which makes for a vibrant, festive atmosphere.
How much does it cost to live in Mannheim?
It costs around €15/ €20 per week for groceries from Aldi or Lidl. With that budget you can eat very healthily and have a well stocked cupboard. The rent is quite high, as are the utility bills. Travel is €57 per month for an all inclusive travel pass.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Mannheim? Is there any advice you can give?
It was hard for me to find accommodation because I wanted to live somewhere that would accept both me and my boyfriend- even if you are willing to pay more, German landlords don't seem to readily accept couples, preferring to rent to just one person (usually stating the contract is for one person only or that the space is not big enough).
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The food here is delicious. You can get very German things like pretzels, schnitzel and currywurst. Or more exotic things like baklava from many of the Turkish bakeries here. There is an emphasis on 'bio' foods (organic).
What places would you recommend visiting in Mannheim?
Wasserturm is definitely worth a visit, it is a beautiful park with a fountain. Also holiday park which is an amusement park with rollercoasters.
Is it good to eat out in Mannheim? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Yes and usually reasonably priced. I really like the little Italian restaurant near Marktplatz (can't remember the name).
