What is it like to live in Manchester? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Manchester is a very nice place to live in. I have been living here for almost 4 years and I do not regret my choice. It is very lively and there are a lot of things to do. The city centre is not too big and everything is fairly concentrated in this area; therefore everything is within walking distance in the city centre.

What is the student lifestyle like in Manchester?

I have only experienced it as a postgrad student therefore my answer might not be the best possible but there are a lot of studenty places offering special deals to students so it is possible to live fairly well as a student in Manchester.

How much does it cost to live in Manchester?

It is not cheap but it is still fairly affordable in comparison with other cities of a similar size in Europe.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Manchester? Is there any advice you can give?

The accommodation market is fairly flexible, especially in terms of house shares and student accommodation. It is a bit trickier if you want to get your own place (flat or house) because you will need a lot of references from previous landlords and various credit history checks. If you have just arrived in Manchester, I would recommend you to find a house share which should be fairly easy and then maybe consider renting your own place after having spent some time in the country.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

It is not very light or delicate but it is very nice! Everyone must try the full English breakfast with a slice of Bury black pudding - unless you are vegetarian!

What places would you recommend visiting in Manchester?

I would recommend you to make your own opinion about Manchester. Everyone has got their favourite places but the Northern Quarter is a nice place to start exploring: it is full of nice bars, shops and cafes.

Is it good to eat out in Manchester? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

There are quite a lot of bars and restaurants in Manchester, and I find it very easy to eat out as a vegetarian. Try the Curry Mile in Rusholme if you want to have a real taste of Asia! You will find there a lot of traditional curry houses open late at night.

Is the nightlife good in Manchester? Where is good to go?

Again, I would recommend you to follow your intuition and discover the city at your own pace. You can start with the Northern Quarter but it gets really busy at weekends. I personally hate Printworks and Deansgate Locks but some might like it: it gets pretty rowdy at night! There are also plenty of student bars along Oxford Road, the student corridor. Deaf Institute is a good place for gigs and nights out.

What advice would you give future students heading to Manchester?

Be curious and adventurous! Manchester is a very friendly and welcoming city.
