Experience in Manchester, United Kingdom by Josh

What is it like to live in Manchester? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

I absolutely love living in Manchester and have so since my first day moving here. The city is huge so there is a great variety of things to do but it isn't so big that you will get lost - it is quite easy to get about!

What is the student lifestyle like in Manchester?

Pretty relaxed, best nights to go out are Wednesday (almost anywhere) and Friday (select few - depends on what you are into). Teachers are always happy to answer any queries.

How much does it cost to live in Manchester?

Ranges between £90 - £125 per week. The more expensive the accommodation, the more likely it is to have bills included, something that is very useful.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Manchester? Is there any advice you can give?

Use the University website for guidance. Halls are a great place to meet people, both domestic and international students.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Amazing. There is such a grand variety of food available here because Manchester is such a diverse city. Best place is probably a place called 'Almost Famous', a nice burger joint in the city centre, but there are hidden gems all over the city which are waiting to be discovered.

What places would you recommend visiting in Manchester?

Old Trafford - probably a bias because I am a United Fan but still. The union sells tickets cheap for students and it is equally as easy to get a tour around the ground. Also the shopping centres - The Trafford centre (just outside the city) and the Arnedale - two great places to spend some downtime. But generally, if you get the opportunity, just look round the place. Loads of interesting things to do.

Is it good to eat out in Manchester? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Almost famous (as previously said). Can't go wrong with a Nando's. Follow the 'eatmcr' account on Instagram to find inspiration for places to go - it's completely independent and shows some of the best places to go.

Is the nightlife good in Manchester? Where is good to go?

Incredible. You won't regret choosing Manchester as a city if you are looking for parties. There is literally somewhere holding a massive event every night. Obviously, the weekdays are better to go out for students. My favourite place to go is a place called 'Ark' on a Friday night. It is easily the most popular student night in Manchester, but it is in a pretty pretentious place so you need to wear smart shoes and top to get in. That being said, it's a fiver to get in and then drinks are cheap all night.

What advice would you give future students heading to Manchester?

Have no fear. Manchester is an amazing city and you will love living here. Northerners are generally nicer than the people down south, so don't be afraid to speak to them because they won't bite your head off! But do be streetwise, there are nasty people in every city, and such people occasionally target students! But if you are smart, you'll get on fine (that was more of a warning than to put you off!).
