Erasmus Experience in Manchester, United Kingdom by Elena
Why did you choose to go to Manchester, United Kingdom?
Because there was a great student environment and moving through the city is quite easy.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
The scholarship longs 9 months. We only received 150 euros per month to cover our spendings, but normally we all receive money from our relatives.
What is the student lifestyle like in Manchester?
We partied almost every day. Tuesdays are great to party near university, there are several offers for students, and there are lots of places to go depending on your musical preferences.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Manchester to other students?
Yes, absolutely.
What is the food like?
Fast food is the most common and cheapest to buy. But there are restaurants in the Curry Mile which are fabulous! Moreover, Wetherspoon restaurants are also great, there you are served British food, very tasty.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Manchester?
I applied for different halls and I was accepted in one of them. It was not difficult.
How much does it cost to live in Manchester?
A lot of money! counting with the accommodation plus the living costs there, it could be around 5. 000/6. 000 euros.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
At the beginning it is a bit difficult because of the accent of the Mancunian people. But after a month you understand almost perfectly what they say. There are conversation courses available at college, where Erasmus students from different countries talk and try to improve their English and other languages level.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Manchester from your city?
By plane from Alicante to Liverpool or to Manchester.
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Manchester?
To Joshua's Brooks, The Factory, Tiger Tiger, The Footage, The Ritz.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Manchester?
The Pub's, The Curry Mile, Picadilly's Wetherspoon, The Oyster's, Nando's.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
- The City Council
- The Cathedral
- Picadilly Gardens
- Old Trafford
- Trafford Centre
- The Eye of Manchester
- Northern Quarter's zone
- Plattfield's Park
- Heaton Park
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Manchester in the future?
If I were you I would try to apply for accommodation in a hall as near as possible to college. In halls you can also party and are safer than a flat. Some people I met there was robbed in their houses, so if you have the chance apply for accommodation in a hall. that's the only thing I would advice.
