Luxembourg, the strangest capital I've been to

Luxembourg, the strangest capital I've been to

I never thought before that one day I would visit Luxembourg. When I decided to go to this city I didn't had any expectation in my head about how everything is gonna look like there. I didn't knew much about the country, just that is a very small one that has a capital with the same name and that's it.

How to get to Luxembourg from Saarbrucken

If you are leaving in Saarbrucken like me, Luxembourg is just 1 hour and 20 minutes away with the FlixBus. The price of the bus ticket is about 6 euros one way and, trust me, is all worth it.

From far as I know, FlixBus has 2 stations in Luxembourg, one is in front of the Railway station and closer to the main city area and the other one is called P+R Bouillon which is about 30 minutes of walk from the city center.

Going around the city

The bus left us at Luxembourg Railway Station, the place where our one day adventure started in this new and strange capital.

From here we started walking and wondering around. Soon we saw a very big bridge that we have to cross in order to reach near the city center. But at first we stoped many times on the bridge to admire the landscape of the city and get a brief image of what Luxembourg is all about.

The relief of the city defines it. Luxembourg is situated on hills and to get from one hill to another you have to cross a long bridge. And that was so cool! As you are on the bridge by looking down you can see people's houses and yards. At times it feels like you are walking on their's rooftop.

We realized that the places that we want to visit are kind of far away from each other and the distances are quite big.

The best solution to see all of Luxembourg was to rent bikes and this is what we did.

Renting bikes to go around Luxembourg

Yes, in Luxembourg you can rent bikes from Vel'OH. All you have to do is downloading their app and make a subscription. For 1 day it costs 2 euros. If you ride from one bike station to another in less then 30 minutes there is no extra charge, but if you do, there will be 1 euro charge.

But a good thing is that the bike stations are close to each other and the app offers a map too with the position of the stations and the available bikes to make it even easier.

The bikes were in a very very good condition. It was such a pleasure to ride on it. Plus, I think they are also semi-electric bikes because it was so easy to pedal them and get high speed quickly.

What you can see in Luxembourg

At first, I would like to say that the configuration of the city is to be admired. The arrangement of the houses on the hills, the combination of the old arhitecture with the modern contemporary buildings and it's surrounding nature.

1. The Notre-Dame Cathedral

Is a Roman Catholic cathedral that combines the late gothic arhitectural style with renaissance elements. Unfortunately, that day visitors were not allowed to enter the church, so we took a look only from the outside.

2. Monument of Remembrance

As a side note, here we found the bike station and decided to rent it.

The monument is placed in Constitution Square and is a obelisk on top of which is represented the goddess of victory, Nike. The statue is a war memorial dedicated to the people that were part of the army during the world war one and world war two.

From here you can see a beautiful panoramic view over the city or go to the city center which is 5 minutes away. If you are getting hungry, then don't worry, the center is filled with restaurants for every pockets and tastes.

3. MUDAM

Since I study Fine Arts, for me, when I go to a new big city, on top of the list are the art museums.

So, we hoop on the bikes and ride to the Museum of Modern Art which is about 20 minutes away from the center. The museum is located near to same important european union institutions, so we got to see those tall glass buidings. As well, from here you have a nice view over Luxembourg.

The arhitecture of the museum is the thing that impressed me the most. Walls and cellings made of glass in a way that let you to see at times the outside too.

On display there were works of contemporary artists. The main exhibition belong to the german artist Jutta Koether who focuses more on painting.

The entrance is free for people who are under 26 years old. The young people and students are privileged and they mustn't miss this opportunity.

4. Parc Municipal

If your friends don't believe you for being in Luxembourg then you have to go inside the Municipal Park and take a photo or many with the Luxembourg sign. It's a must!

5. Adolphe Bridge and Parcs de la Pétrusse

We enjoyed so much going around with the bikes. A thing that I will never forget is riding with the bike on Adolphe Bridge which has a lower deck dedicated to bikes. You can stop on the bridge and look around over the Parcs de la Pétrusse.

The Adolphe bridges is a symbol of Luxembourg and also one of the main tourist attractions.

6. The National Museum of History and Art

This museum is located in the heart of the historical center, so if you don't have enough time to go to MUDAM and you wanna stay around the center this one can be a better decision.

Here you can see artworks and artefacts which belong to the Luxembourg history and culture. You can get a deeper understanding of the country and city by visiting this museum.

And, of course, you can enter for free if you are under 26 years old.

7. Grund and Ascenseur Elevator Plateau St.Esprit Grund

We kept seeing the houses down the valley and soon we found out about how can we go on the bottom of the valley: via an elevator. Going up and down two times it was more then great. The experience let us to enjoy the landscape from diffrent points of view and after a long day of walking and bike it was nice to reach another place so fast and, of course, free.

We descended with the elevator in the Grund. This is a a quarter situated below the city center on the side of the Alzette river and offers a very specific atmosphere.

Here you can feel the vibe of Luxembourg.

At the end of the day we went to the P+R Bouillon Station and catched the FilxBus for returning to Saarbrucken.

Tips I find helpful while visiting the capital of Luxembourg

  •  rent a bike to go around the city

  •  charge your phone before, you will need Google Maps

  • wear confy shoes if you wanna visit as much as you can
