Experience in Los Angeles, United States by Finnegan

What is it like to live in Los Angeles? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Los Angeles is a fantastic city to live in if you have enough money to afford the living costs and a car. As you likely know the city is huge and public transportation is not very good so I would recommend using a scooter or car. Scooters are useful since the gas prices are cheap and using them means you can beat traffic. Furthermore, since the weather is usually very good with little rain using a scooter is very good idea for students especially since it is cheaper than having a car.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Although cities like New York and San Francisco generally boast as having better food I would argue Los Angeles is equal or better. For one, Los Angeles has a lot of large ethnic minorities meaning you can try different cuisines. Of course, the Mexican/Latin American food is excellent given the large population. Also, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Thai, Persian... and the list goes on. Generally you can find these restaurants in neighborhoods that are predominantly that ethnicity.

What places would you recommend visiting in Los Angeles?

Of course the beach is wonderful in Los Angeles. However, the water temperature is usually very cold. The best beaches are in Malibu but all along the coastline are great beaches that are easily accessible.

I would also recommend going to the Griffith Park Observatory for great views of Los Angeles and the Hollywood Sign. Downtown Los Angeles has recently become much nicer and has great food and coffee as well as art galleries and street art.

Is it good to eat out in Los Angeles? Can you tell us your favorite spots?

Yes, I would like to think that Los Angeles has some of the best selection of restaurants simply because of the range and variety of restaurants.

What advice would you give future students heading to Los Angeles?

Look into using a scooter as transportation as it is much cheaper and you generally don't need a license to drive one. Plus in California, you are allowed to drive in between the lanes/cars meaning you can beat the horrible Los Angeles traffic!
