Study in Ljubljana as Slovenian student

What is it like to live in Ljubljana? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Ljubljana is a small, beautiful city. Living there as a student is really easy and cheap. You get really reduced price for food in many restaurants and really cheap tickets for public transport, also student residences are not expensive and if you want you can also find a shared flat for really small price. Also everything is really close, because it is so small, otherwise there are good bus connections. People are nice and will help you if you ask them. But on the other hand it is still a really small town, so maybe you don't get so many opportunities and chances to get a job you want or you dream about. You also have pretty nice offer of cultural events as concerts, theater, ballet... And of course there are some places to have a great party.

What is the student lifestyle like in Ljubljana?

Student s life is really easy. You have normally things at the University in the morning, some also in the afternoon. You can take a lunch in between in nearest restaurant, because almost every restaurant offers you a student discount. And you have quite a lot of free time, you can walk around the city, visit concerts, go to shopping, and party at the evenings.

How much does it cost to live in Ljubljana?

Well, if you compare it to any other European big city it is quite cheap. Especially because as a student you get many discounts. Like lunch for 3-4€, cheap monthly tickets for public transport all over the city. Or you can also use BicikeLj- bikes all around Ljubljana for just I think about 3€ per year. And room in student residence is also cheap. You will pay a little bit more than 100€ or you can also ent a room in apartment with other students. For that you pay a little bit more like 140-250€, depends on location, how big the apartment is and about the monthly costs.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Ljubljana? Is there any advice you can give?

I am not sure how it works for international students, but getting a room in residence is quite hard for Slovenian people. There are long lists. But there are many apartments to rent. So if you are looking for apartment with few more friends it is really easy to find and not expensive. Or you can just search on the Internet for apartment, a lot of students who rented an apartment is looking for a roommate.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

You can eat anything you like. There is a good system for students. You get some reduced prices for students in a lot of restaurants, so you pay only 3 or 4€ for the whole lunch (soup, main dish, dessert). And you can choose Mexican, Chinese, mensas, pizzerias, spagetterias, or a restaurant with daily lunch offers. You really can get anything you want for really cheap.

What places would you recommend visiting in Ljubljana?

I would mostly recommend to go to the old city centre. It is a beautiful place with nice streets, old buildings, small, cute shops, nice decoration in winter and also there is music on the streets in Christmas time. And there are a lot of small bars to hang with your friends. In nice weather there is a nice walk by Ljubljanica river.

Is it good to eat out in Ljubljana? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Yes. I think it is easier just to go to eat to restaurant. And you pay the same as you would cook. Almost the same. Maybe a little bit more. Or if it is raining and you don't feel like going out, there are a lot of restaurants that offer student lunch with delivery. And is also not expensive. For example you can get pizza for 3€ or Mexican for 3. 70€...

I love Cantina Mexicana, Mexican food, very good taste, very big portions. And also I like mensa in Maxi market.

Is the nightlife good in Ljubljana? Where is good to go?

Depends on the day. There are a lot of Slovenian students going out on Thursdays, because they go home on Fridays (if they are not from Ljubljana). I think the best parties are at Klub Top. Also nice for beginning of the night is Parliament pub. And I love Skelet. It is a bar in old city centre, they offer cocktails. Cocktails are really good and you always get 2 for 1.

What advice would you give future students heading to Ljubljana?

Just meet some Slovenian students, I think they are very open to meet international students, they will help you with advices where to eat, where to get the real feeling of Slovenia and where to go to party.
