The top 5 Peruvian dishes that you have to try during your visit to Lima! Let's eat!

Hello all of you food-lovers in the world, especially the Peruvians! There is no doubt about it that people eat wonderfully in Peru, and that's why Lima is considered the best gastronomic city to taste the best Peruvian dishes, according to the World Travel Awards - who are, in fact, considered to be the world's "Oscars" for tourism.

There are many motives for feeling happy to live in Peru, as well as for coming to visit. Above all, it is a sin to come to Lima and not marvel at all the gastronomic options that we have in our capital city.

Today I was thinking about advising future travellers and Erasmus students so that they have these next couple of dishes on their list of "must try" Peruvian foods when they arrive in the "gastronomic capital of America".

There is a video that I saw more than a thousand times, and each time I saw it, it motivated me to continue writing about Peruvian gastronomy. Now that I am away from my home country, it seems like the video, despite being a little short, it represents us very well in its 59 seconds. It is a video made by the Peru Brand that you can watch by simply clicking here. It is the best thing to introduce you to the five most classic Peruvian dishes that you need to explore in the City of Kings.

Still, I'm not going to focus on the restaurants where you can find them, but rather the dishes themselves that you can taste on your arrival in Lima. It is a very diverse city, so take a pen and paper with you and travel together to try the tastiest foods that my city has to offer, according to my modest opinion (of course, I'm going to miss loads out, so just to give you an overview I'll only pick seven of them).

Number 1: "Lomo Saltado" Salted Loin

One of the most emblematic Peruvian dishes in the world, it has in its ingredients: tomatoes native to Peru, onion, beef, and the spicy Peruvian dressing that makes it one of the stars. There is a video that is only 1:46 mins from the Peru Brand website on YouTube where you can see the salted loin being prepared, you need only to click here.

Here I have shared with you a picture of a succulent piece of Peruvian salted loin, one of my favourite dishes and also, one of the ones that I learned to cook thanks to the lessons given by my generous mother.

Number 2: "Cebiche" Ceviche

From the depths of our Peruvian sea we have managed to get the best fish in the world in order to create a simple, original dish that can not be described in words - but rather only with its 100% Peruvian flavour. The recipe is simple but, at the same time, it is ambitious to turn it into one of the dishes that you should try on your arrival in Lima. The ingredients include fish, lemon, yellow pepper, and onion. It can be accompanied with potato or sweet potato, in addition to having a delicious sample of the Andean toast.

The ceviche is our entire mixture. If you want to find out a little more about ceviche, I invite you to click here which will bring you to a link to this Peruvian dish that is conquering the world. As an addition, you will find the video explaining a little about the Peruvian cause, a potato-based dish with yellow pepper that shows us why Peru and Lima are part of the gastronomic boom that stops for nobody! Let's eat!

Here is an image of the typical Peruvian ceviche that you can find in my country, a marine delicacy that will have you licking your fingers!

Number 3: "Ají de Gallina" Chilli Pepper Chicken

A Creole dish that will take you straight to heaven, this one has chicken breast, Peruvian yellow pepper, rice, potato, and Peruvian seasoning that makes the dish invite us to eat more and more. This Creole dish has come to Lima to stay and conquer the Peruvian dinner table; it's a dish that is consumed at least once a week at the dining room tables of Peruvian families everywhere. This is a Creole dish that has adapted so well so that each family really has its own little secret and their own way of cooking it.

The recipe is nothing complicated, and in fact, the results will explode on your palate. Full of pleasure and simplicity, this is what makes it one of my favourite Peruvian dishes. If you want to find out more about this dish, simply click here and it will bring you to a link where a video will show you its preparation, made by a Spanish cook.

Here is an image of the succulent Chilli Pepper Chicken. As you can see, the preparation can vary depending on the place you're eating at. It is quite a mouth-watering dish and one of my preferred options. I had to put it in this list of top Peruvian food in Lima for a reason!

Number 4: "Anticuchos" Cow's Heart Kebabs

Limean people usually eat this almost always at night. It is a dish that will leave you wanting to eat a good Afro-Peruvian dish, the best thing we do Lima is to consume it at night, there are many places in Lima where you can get it, therefore as it is a popular dish, I have in my list of my tastiest Peruvian dishes from my country.

In order to learn a little more about the recipe for "antichucho", you can click here. This link will take you to a YouTube video only 1:53 mins to whet your appetite and come to Lima to try this dish. Of course, the recommendation I can give you is to accompany it with a glass of "chicha morada" ice cream!

In the following image there is the traditional presentation of the "anticucho" in Peru. Obviously, it is always well accompanied by potato and corn. Furthermore, you can ask for creams so that the flavor becomes even more exquisite:

Number 5: "Arroz Chaufa" Fried Rice

A dish that can be found in most Chinese restaurants. It has two main influences: the Peruvian influence and the Chinese influence. It is a dish that comes rice and Chinese onion with chunks of chicken.

Chinese food can be easily obtained anywhere in the city: if you want to see a little more about a review of this dish in Lima, you can click here, which will take you to a review of Chinese food in Lima. In Lima, we usually accompany it with a yellow fizzy drink called inca kola.

Here, with much joy, I share with you an image of the succulent fried rice, a dish so well received here in Lima that you can find it in almost every district of the city if you only ask any Limean where the "chifa" of the neighbourhood is!

BONUS!

Now that we have seen the five top dishes that I would recommend for you to taste, I want to give you a little bonus one so that you can learn a little more about Peruvian gastronomy:

Pisco: the flagship drink of Peru

As a final point and so that our lips are moistened with the tradition of Peru, what better than to leave you being seduced by our flagship drink: the Pisco. Made with the tradition of grape distillation, it is an interesting sample of flavors that can be taken as a shot as well as with different cocktails. For example, we have our traditional pisco sour cocktail, as well as our "chilcano", both perfect to drink at any time of the year and, if you are in Lima, a blessed city of flavor and drinks, you should have it on your list.

Here I've shown you just one of the many things that can be done with our pisco, this is our traditional pisco sour which has, of course, pisco, egg white, lemon juice, syrup, ice and a hit of angostura bitters.

I can also show you a video about the pisco sour that lasts only 2:33 mins. Simply click here to find out how extraordinary the Peruvian pisco is, it was born in Peru, there's no doubt about that! And it was born to stay forever.

Thank you so much for reading this post! I hope to encourage you to try each one of these dishes that we have in Lima that you can find in many parts of the city. As I said at the beginning, I'm not going to talk now about the places, but of the dishes themselves. To summarise the Peruvian dishes in only five dishes is a very small number, but this is a good way to start falling in love with Peruvian cuisine.

Come and see Lima! And I hope you liked these recommendations very much. Eat with enthusiasm!
