Experience in Leuven, Belgium by Dorien
What is it like to live in Leuven? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
Leuven is an awesome city because it is quite small and everything is nearby. There are a lot of students, so you can never feel alone!
How much does it cost to live in Leuven?
Belgium is not one of the cheapest countries, but you can find a lot of student-discounts on food and entertainment (movies for example).
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Leuven? Is there any advice you can give?
The best way to find accommodation (it is called a 'kot' in dutch), certainly for a short term, is to look on the website Kotwijs.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Of course, french fries and waffles are famous in Belgium, but you can find a lot of italian, mexican and asian food for a cheap price as well. And let's not forget the variety of beers!
What places would you recommend visiting in Leuven?
If you like chocolate, you have to go to 'Quetzal', a chocolate bar near the Tiensestraat in the city centre. If you're more into cocktails, visit Mattiz on the Naamsestraat, they have a variety of really good cocktails!
Is it good to eat out in Leuven? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
A really nice place to go as a student is 'De Werf' on the Hogeschoolplein, also in the citycentre. It's a student-centered restaurant where they have good food for a small price.
Is the nightlife good in Leuven? Where is good to go?
As there are a lot of students, you cen really feel at home in Leuven! There is a lively nightlife scene at the 'Oude Markt', the Naamse and the Tiensestraat, which you must visit while you're in Leuven.
