Why did you choose to go to Leuven, Belgium?

I've been to Leuven before and the town appealed to me. I also knew that I would be able to practice bachata & kizomba a lot, which was important to me.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

My contract is for 10 months and I receive 400 euros per month.

What is the student lifestyle like in Leuven?

Leuven is mostly student city, so almost everything is related to this. From Monday to Friday there are plenty of events and activities, especially designed for students. There are also many discounts in restaurants and bars. The town is relatively small, so you can reach any place on foot, however, most people choose bikes.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Leuven to other students?

Leuven is a lovely place and once you get to know it, you will easily fall in love. However, KU Leuven does not give a typical Erasmus experience. They take education very seriously, so do not expect any special treatment. I found it very stressful. If you'd rather chill during your exchange think twice!

What is the food like?

As I am gluten free, I mostly cook by myself, so it's difficult to say.

Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Leuven?

No, not at all. I used Facebook groups and found a lovely studio within 2 days.

How much does it cost to live in Leuven?

About 700 euros a month, depending on accommodation.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

CLT and ILT offer outstanding level of languages. No matter if you want to keep improving your English or learn a bit of Dutch, try it out!

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Leuven from your city?

Take a flight. Ryanair offers very cheap flights, but to get to Leuven from Charleroi it takes 2 hours and costs about 15 euros. It's better to pay more and get to National Airport in Zaventem, which is only 15 minutes away from Leuven.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Leuven?

On Mondays and Wednesdays enjoy salsa/bachata/kizomba party in Cafe Manger, Oude Markt. For hip-hop, afro & rnb lovers there are events at Barcode and Ons Huis.

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Leuven?

  • Green Way - a vegan/gluten free restaurant
  • Exki - a convenient place to grab a lunch or coffee with a cake
  • Loving Hut - another vegan/gluten free option, a bit more expensive

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

Just walk around the town, get lost, admire the atmosphere.
