Why did you choose to go to Leuven, Belgium?

I chose to go to Leuven, at first because of the reputation of the university (one of the oldest and the best of Europe) and at second to know a new culture, a new country, but in a very little and student city.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

It's not really a scholarship, I'm there for an intership of six months in one of the university lab. At the total I've received 1800€ (300€/month).

What is the student lifestyle like in Leuven?

It's just... busy! Really busy! The city is built on the university, and all Leuven is a big campus! Each day of the week, there are different parties, TD or cantus (special belgian student events), and on the week end, when you think it's over... there're the erasmus events! No time to be bored!

Would you recommend the city and the University of Leuven to other students?

Of course!

What is the food like?

Ohh... for this point... I like vegetables and diet food, and here, everything is fat, fried... not for me! But the chocolate and the beer are good and very cheap.

Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Leuven?

Comparing than France, yes... It's very easy to find a kot, and the website of the KU Leuven is very well done! But for the space, I find it expensive.

How much does it cost to live in Leuven?

  • For an accomodation: around 330€/month
  • For the food: around 120€/month
  • For the student life: 100€/month (sometimes, much much more! )

Make the count!

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

Yes, you can learn many languages, at the University, but also in independants organisms (as Pangea) which organize talk courses.

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Leuven from your city?

By bike! You can rent a bike for only 70€ for 6 month, and all the city moves thanks the bikes! You can also have a bus pass for only 20€ at the university register office. It's very economical!

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Leuven?

At Oude Markt, it's a place in the city center with all the pub you want!

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

Aremberg Castle, the library, the botanical garden, Leuven museum, the Stella Artois industry...

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Leuven in the future?

Buy raincoat... it's cold and wet!
