Leon, Spain

Why did you choose to go to Leon, Spain?

I didn't get to choose, Leon was the only option.

How long did you stay there? How much funding did you receive?

I was there for five months and received approx 900€ a month (grants from Crous and Mobilité).

what is student life like in Leon?

You have plenty of opportunities to party, particularly with other Erasmus students. The chance of getting to know the locals is pretty slim, apart from your flatmates. There are lots of events organised for Erasmus students which have a great atmosphere; all the Erasmus students know each other.

Would you recommend the city and university of Leon to other students?

No. The weather isn't very good (it's really cold and rains a lot) and the home students aren't very friendly. I would only recommend it for students who really want to experience the night life, because there isn't much to do during the day. The city is really small and you don't have that many lessons.

What is the food like?

Some of their specialities are delicious.

How did you find accommodation?

The university recommended a website that allowed us to view different possibilities. But look out for scams - there are a lot here!

How did you find the cost of rent? And the prices in general?

They are very reasonable - you can find accommodation for 150€ a month. But make sure you visit because there are plenty of places that you just couldn't live in. There certainly isn't a shortage of accommodation, you might even find somewhere in a family home.

How did you find learning the language? Did you take part in courses organised by the university?

It was a bit difficult given that the home students aren't very keen to talk to the Erasmus students. You really have to live with Spanish people.

The languages courses organised by the university are very useful, I really enjoyed them and would recommend them without hesitation. It's also a good way to get to know people.

And for food?

Barrio Húmedo offers tapas at a very reasonable price.

What cultural visits would you recommend?

There are lots of museums, a cathedral and it's also very easy to travel to the surrounding towns and cities from Leon.

Any advice for future students in Leon?

It's a pretty city but only choose it if your main focus is nightlife. It's easy to make friends, especially if you attend the intensive language courses.
