Experience in León, Spain of Raquel
What do you think about León for living? Do you recommend it? How is it?
León is a good city for living if you like tranquility, it's a small city but very lively. I totally recommend it.
How is the student's atmosphere in León?
León has a good student's atmosphere, even it isn't a proper student city the atmosphere is pretty good.
Especially on Thursdays night, all the students go party and it's very cool.
How much is living in León?
Apartments of 3 bedrooms are about 500-600€ per month if they are quite new. Old apartments cost about 400-450. But it depends on the neighborhood where you want to live.
Student's dormitories are more expensive, around 600-700€.
On the other hand, daily life is very cheap, you can have dinner in a good restaurant for less than 20€ per person. Moreover, go party is also cheap, clubs don't have entrance fee (except one) and drinks are about 5 or 6€.
Was it difficult to find accommodation in León? Could you suggest something?
For me it wasn't difficult because I'm from a city near here and I could come personally to look for it, but being from another place I don't think it would be difficult because there are many apartaments for rent, especially in June and July when the university year ends.
I recommend La Palomera for living, that's where the most part of the students live, or La Serna.
How is it the food of the country? What are your favorite dishes?
Food is really good, especially potato omelette (tortilla de patata), charcuterie, Serrano ham...
Here in León it's very typical "morcilla", I don't like it but people from León love it.
Which places do you recommend to visit in León?
If you come to León you have to visit the cathedral, the Basilic of San Isidoro and the Convent of de San Marcos, the bullring, Botines' house, MUSAC (Museum of Modern Art), the Main Square, Ancha Street, the wall and the Jail Arch (el Arco de la Cárcel), the Lions' bridge and the river Bernesga walk, the Cid's Park.
A place that I really love is a big park called La Candamia which is situated near the river, and during spring and summer is full of people sunbathing and doing sports.
What about eating out? Could you say your favorite places?
For eating out in León the best option is "tapas" in "the Barrio Húmedo" or "the Barrio Romántico", there's a lot of cafeterias where you ask for a drink and they give you a bit of food (tapa), different in each one.
Which clubs do you recommend to go party in León?
For partying, most of the places are in "el Barrio Húmedo".
Before 5AM people use to go to Garden, Buddha, Traga... there's a pub which is from the Erasmus' students called Delicatessen (each year is a different one). At 5AM those places are closed and others are opening like: Weekend, Studio 54 (here they have entrance fee about 2 or 3€ and is not in "el barrio Húmedo", it's a bit further), etc.
Any advise that you would like to give to future students in León?
I recommend you to enjoy a lot this city, it's really charming and people is very nice. You can have really fun here!
