The cliffs of Lagos

Published by flag-be Charlotte Mullender — 4 years ago

The city of Lagos, in the south of Portugal, is a beautiful historic place to visit on the coast of the Algarve. But what is even more worth seeing is its unique coast with the impressive sand-coloured cliffs.

The coastline is full of little bays, beautiful beaches and the impressive cliffs. From the centre you can walk to the sea where you have the agony of choice between the multiple places to enjoy a relaxed beach afternoon.

The closest beach from the town, and also one of the most crowded ones in Lagos is the Praia da Batata. The beach is pretty small, sheltered in a beautiful bay surrounded by cliffs. The water is super clear and small holes in the cliffs lead to other small coves, which are sometimes a little less crowded. From the beach you can even see the fortress of Lagos.

If you are willing to walk a little bit (which is beautiful along the coast by the way! ) you can visit Praia da Dona Ana. Stairs lead down to the sandy beach, that is, similar to Praia da Batata, also surrounded by cliffs. From here you also have the stunning view on the cliffs that lay inside the sea.

The most scenery beach of the coast of Lagos lays although a little bit further. Passing the Praia da Dona Ana you will reach at some point of time the beautiful Ponta da Piedade. The stunning view on the rock formations and cliffs are a well known picture and even more beautiful when you are standing in front of them. There is actually just a very small beach, but most people come to just enjoy the view anyways.

Those are just some of the numerous beaches and bays to explore at the coast of Lagos. If you want to avoid crowded beaches there are great little bays that you can only reach by walking a little further and maybe through some rocks and little ways, where you can find yourself pretty much all alone in a tiny bay surrounded by white sand, cliffs and blue water.

A great way to even better enjoy the coast and the cliffs is to take a boat ride. We weren’t planning on doing so, but when we were relaxing on a quiet beach, an older man in his little boat came and asked us if we wanted to take a ride. As he made us a really good price we agreed and even though he did not speak a lot of English and we didn’t speak any Portuguese, he took us on a great trip along the coast trying to explain us things about the cliffs with gestures. To see the cliffs from the water was a very beautiful experience! Also Paulo (that was the old man’s name) drove us with the boat to amazing caves in the cliffs and we even made a break so we could cool off at a nice swim in front of the great scenery. Our boat trip was very spontaneous but made our day at the cliffs of Lagos unforgettable.
