What happens to an Italian that moves to Denmark?

It has been almost a year since I started college. Now that being said, I must also say that I did not stay in Italy where I was born and raised, but I left. I am a full-time student in Denmark. I wanted to be in an international and different environment than the one I grew up in, so Denmark was a perfect choice. I can't really say that it was a perfect match with myself, though.

I was an exchange student in the USA when I was still in high school, and now I wanted to try something even "harder": living on my own in a cold country and where my only way to communicate with people was English. It has definitely been quite an experience, I can't really decide whether it was amazing or simply pretty good, but it was one.

First impression of Kolding: little, but nice. I come from Milan, which is more chaotic than this Danish little town. Also, the Nordic style is very interesting for a person like me who grew up where all the things are pretty old, and roofs are reddish. There's also a little lake and even some little beaches along the fjord. There's one unit of everything you might need, a few clubs and supermarkets. But still... too quiet for me. Sundays were kind of sad and I swear sometimes I even wished that Monday could come quicker.

I think that the weather was too big of a change among all. If it wasn't super cold it was raining. If it wasn't raining it was definitely windy, and most of the times it was even a combination of the two. There is nothing I hate more: the rain and the wind together because using an umbrella becomes useless and if you do use it, then it breaks.

I knew the weather would be bad but I think that we also failed to have places we could hang out at. There's just one café which I think is good and not overpriced, but the others are pricey and their wifi is not even great. When the weather is not your friend all you can do is stay in and watch a movie, or stay at a friend's place and do something fun.

Speaking about jobs, as I am not that experienced yet - and most of the offers required The Danish language - I ended up working in a warehouse, where I could communicate with coworkers in English and do my own thing.

So what actually happened to me since I started college in Denmark?

  • I started to appreciate the sun more;
  • I actually missed Milan, from time to time;
  • I signed my first house contract;
  • I started working to pay my own bills;
  • I have more friends abroad than I do in my home country ( even though this might be applicable even before my departure).

Anyways I am finally on my way to a new country for my Erasmus, it will be my third experience studying abroad and I'm excited. I am actually the kind of person who gets bored after doing the same things over and over. I need to be busy at all times. I will try my best to be present in the UK, to make the best out of everything.
