Erasmus Experience in Kaunas, Lithuania by Julia
Why did you choose to go to Kaunas, Lithuania?
I choose Kaunas because of the University of Technology and its master programme. Moreover, I have never gone to the Baltic Countries, and I thought it was a great opportunity.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
The master programme lasts about 5 months if you arrive in February. I received 570€.
What is the student lifestyle like in Kaunas?
There are many students in Kaunas thanks to faculties. Many bars and restaurants offer discounts to students. There are some events but not only for students (as the jazz festival)
Would you recommend the city and the University of Kaunas to other students?
I would recommend Kaunas, even it could be a bit sad in winter and people seem to be very distant. But the university (KTU) is great. All is new, modern.
What is the food like?
Traditional food is not original but there are some good restaurants and a big variety (mexican, italian, vegetarian).
There are many places to have a snack, open all the day (I recommend the Holy Donut which is excellent, donuts and bagels are home-made).
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Kaunas?
I found my accommodation on Internet, on an advertising website.
How much does it cost to live in Kaunas?
Cost of live is low. For shopping, there are many malls and mini markets. For the transport, one ticket costs 0, 75€ and for 3 months as a student it will cost 13€. Even accommodation is cheap, even if energy (gas, electricity) could be expensive.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Many young people and restaurant staff speak English. But at the supermarket or elsewhere, everybody does not speak English. At KTU, lithuanian courses are available.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Kaunas from your city?
The fastest and economical way is by plane. With Ryanair, fares are low.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Kaunas?
The Holy Donut (bagels and donuts), The Republic (pub and snacks) are good places.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
The old town of Kaunas is nice to visit (with a good weather). Vilnius (1h30 by train from Kaunas) has beautiful neighborhoods.
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Kaunas in the future?
Winter is a sad season, but with spring, temperatures get higher. If you stay in a dormitory, you will get friends easily. But if you find an accommodation in the town or the old town, it is better to find roommates to not be alone.
