Jyväkylä in a nutshell
What is Jyväskylä like?
I'll share my thoughts about the town from a student's point of view. I'm a university student and I have been living here for a year. A good word to discribe Jyväskylä would be compact. It's a simple, small town with the benefets of bigger student cities. With the word compact I mean that everything here is close. You definitely need to get yourself a bike, it's fast and cheap to move around with it. Jyväskylä is surrounded by beautiful nature, even right in the city centre you can climb to Harju and take a walk in the woods. And whenever you're in the need of peace and silence, there are many pretty lakes for that.
What is there for students?
Jyväskylä is a lively town mostly because of the students. In the autumn the city comes back alive as the students return from their holidays. There are a lot of student events, sport tournaments, hangouts and parties during the whole school year. The organization for exchange students is really active and arranges a lot of things in order to give the exchange students as good experiences as possible. Jyväskylä is also excellent for sports, the university and JAMK organize all kinds of sports for you to join. In general the people are helpful and they speak English.
Why go to Jyväskylä?
What is really positive in Jyväskylä (and in Finland in general) is that everything is well organized. Nothing is made too complicated and things just work out. You can say that it's safe and easy here. I can recommend Jyväskylä to anyone who wants to get familiar with the Finnish culture and the Finns. Try sauna, skiing, ice skating, camping...enjoy the combination of peaceful nature and a lively citylife. If you're never going to Finland for holiday, go exchange!
