Experience in Istanbul, Turkey by Robin
What is it like to live in Istanbul? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
It's really big and crowded. Living in Istanbul is like being in a time machine. The more you explore the historical and cultural places the more you drift away from the present
What is the student lifestyle like in Istanbul?
Ooh, student life. This is the worst part of Istanbul. Ok, first, there are many universities you can apply to. But that doesn't mean they are qualified universities. If you are looking forward to study in Istanbul you should definitely make a broad research on the university.
How much does it cost to live in Istanbul?
Let's talk about student life. First, it is very expensive. The student dorms are too expensive, the rents are as well. The only thing that is cheap is transportation. And public transportation is what you will use as much as your toothbrush. As a student I only pay 1,25 for a ticket (you have to appl for a student card tho).
Food also isn't cheap but if you make a little research on cheap places you'll find some.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Istanbul? Is there any advice you can give?
Actually no. It's really easy since there are MILLIONS OF STUDENT DORMS. But I recommend you to apply for a private student dorm. They may be expensive but you get more of what you paid for.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Ooh the turkish cuisine is the best one. If you are planning to waste a lot of money on food, you are in the right place. There are so many delicious foods. But my favorite is döner which is basically burrito but in Turkish style. You should also try iskender kebap or kebap in general (iskender kebap is basically kebap with sauce and yogurt)
What places would you recommend visiting in Istanbul?
You should definitely go to the Galata tower. It's one of my favorite places to visit whenever I get the time. If you take the tram at Cevizlibag tram station, you will see all the beautiful places of Istanbul.
Is it good to eat out in Istanbul? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Yeah, I think food is a topic I can't complain about. I don't have any favorite places but mmmh iskender kebap ❤❤❤
Is the nightlife good in Istanbul? Where is good to go?
I don't know much about the night life in Istanbul since I came here for my studies. But my friends who often go to parties and stuff always tell me that it is great.
What advice would you give future students heading to Istanbul?
Don't let you get fooled by local tradesmen. They'll give you a high price on what you want to buy. If it happens just don't buy it or complain about the price until they tell you a reasonable price
