Why did you choose to go to Istanbul, Turkey?

I chose Istanbul, Turkey because of its rich culture and significance it holds in history. It’s very beautiful and vibrant and the people are very friendly and hospitable.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

The scholarship is for five months, and I received about 70% of it to cater for my living costs.

What is the student lifestyle like in Istanbul?

The student lifestyle is pretty chill, with lots of academic requirements but also ample to time to have fun with friends and tour this beautiful city.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Istanbul to other students?

Yes, I would, although I had a scholarship with Koç University and I had such a wonderful experience.

What is the food like?

The food is very good, with so many options and I particularly love their khebab and pizzas.

Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Istanbul?

I had student accommodation with the University so I did not have to struggle for housing here.

How much does it cost to live in Istanbul?

It costs roughly about 800€ monthly to stay in Istanbul.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

Yes, it is relatively easier to study the Turkish language and there are language courses available at Koç University. It was one of my favorite courses.

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Istanbul from your city?

I would say the furries and metro buses.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Istanbul?

Unfortunately due to the COVID-19 pandemic, I hardly had the the chance to go out at night but I hear the clubs at Beşiktaş are pretty cool.

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Istanbul?

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

Ayasophia
The blue Mosque
Çamlica Mosque
Istanbul Archaeological Museum
The Grand Bazaar
There are many more around Turkey, other cities such as Izmir, Ephesus, Cappadocia all filled with historical buildings.

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Istanbul in the future?

Be prepared to be amazed by the beauty of Istanbul.
