Experience in Istanbul, Turkey by Özgür
What is it like to live in Istanbul? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
If you are from a normal city and would like to feel how it is to live in a developing country metropolis, go for it. But if hours spent on transportation, the chaos, the grey and uniform outlook does not appeal to you, I'd suggest to stay away.
What is the student lifestyle like in Istanbul?
The educational system in Turkey is much different than the conditions you would have in any EU country. Your time would be consumed by presentations to be prepared and handed in a written form, the mid-term exams which were not in existence in France and the finals. Additionally, there are no week-long holidays for Easter or Spring Break.
How much does it cost to live in Istanbul?
If you are heading here with an Erasmus loan, nothing you should be worried about due to Euro-Lira exchange rates advantages.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Istanbul? Is there any advice you can give?
Not really. Students often install in districts around universities and people are looking for co-location almost all the time. Try to search for the university you are heading and participate in their Facebook users groups. People often post ads there.
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
Istanbul should be one of the gastronomic capitals. It is almost impossible to be unable to find any world cuisine at a very good quality. The only rare options are for vegetarians and vegans. I would advise many local and less known dishes, just ask me ;)
What places would you recommend visiting in Istanbul?
The historic peninsula is a must. I would only advise to see the Bosphorus Fortresses and the surrounding green area in the spring.
Is it good to eat out in Istanbul? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
Just pick any well known mall and you would already find plenty to choose from in the food court. If you are curious about the Ottoman cuisine, try Konyalı restaurants. For other specific meals, feel free to shoot any question.
Is the nightlife good in Istanbul? Where is good to go?
I am more of a moderate city guy so I don't like it here as there is a plethora of options and almost everywhere is crowded by local guys, willing to hit on any foreign female while not being able to strike an intelligent conversation with. So, maybe first attend daytime activities to pick up your partying bunch and then go with people you trust to get the most out of the nights out. 360 in Taksim and Reina at Bebek are the most elite clubs so maybe get a taste of them if you're into it.
What advice would you give future students heading to Istanbul?
Be in command of whom you're meeting among the local people and don't be satisfied with the bunch showing up to every Erasmus activity. Believe me when I say, that there are much more interesting people with the possibility of a lifelong friendship who are just not into throwing themselves into those "hunting" areas.
