What is it like to live in Istanbul? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Living in Istanbul feels like living in several different cities (even countries) at the same time. In that, it is really huge, houses aroun 13 millions of dwellers, has plenty of districts, each of which has a different atmosphere,. It's a culture boost and it makes the city very lively.

Although, this liveliness can cause some problems in such matters as transport, housing etc. In my opinion, the biggest problem in the city is the inefficient transport and the lack of a widely-established underground network, as the city is really big and traffic jams are unavoidable&unbearable.

After all, for a different experience, I'd recommend at least an exchange or short-term stay in the city. Because it really depends on the person and how s/he values the time they spend whether s/he will like LIVING in the city or not.

What is the student lifestyle like in Istanbul?

The student life is very colourful in Istanbul as the country itself has a high ratio of young population. There are many places where you can go out and some really nice student communities to help you out to make it easier for you.

How much does it cost to live in Istanbul?

It really depends on your personal expenses and preferences however, there are websites&statistics where you can see the costs of eating&rent&clothing etc. and get a general idea.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Istanbul? Is there any advice you can give?

It's not difficult to find accomodation. The rents are not so high. After all, the currency is cheaper. Additionally, there are many students coming to Istanbul from the other parts of Turkey and many of them look for flat-mates + many people are willing to rent out their flats to students.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

All types of food are available. There are many fast-food shops which are open till late. Turkish cusine is very broad, I'm sure you will find the optimal taste for yourself.

What places would you recommend visiting in Istanbul?

The historical places are quite in the center of the city, such as Blue Mosque, Hagia Sofia etc. During your stay, you will enjoy the Bosphorous. I'd also recommend you to pay a visit to the Pricess' Islands to get away from the city.

Is it good to eat out in Istanbul? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

It is! My fav. spots are generally around Taksim, Galata.

Is the nightlife good in Istanbul? Where is good to go?

According to what I hear from my foreign friends, the nightlife is crazy in Istanbul!

What advice would you give future students heading to Istanbul?

Live close to the heart of the city. The city will welcome you ;)
