What is it like to live in Istanbul? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Istanbul is a metropolitan city so there are problems of pollution and traffic but putting all that aside, the city is extremely beautiful. The transportation to city centers like Taksim, Karaköy, Beşiktaş, Kadıköy etc is easy despite the traffic because of the subway infrastructure and sea transportation but remote neigbourhoods are rather harder to travel. The city has everything you could ask for: cute cafes, beautiful view, lively night life, historical and art museums, cultural and historical heritage, camp areas, beaches... You can never get bored in Istanbul.

What is the student lifestyle like in Istanbul?

It depends on where you study. Big universities’ campus areas are far from the city center so the students have to spend most of their time in the campus. Students whose universities are closer to the center can enjoy the city more easily.

How much does it cost to live in Istanbul?

It is not common to rent rooms in Istanbul so you have to find roommates and rent an apartment instead. The rents are a bit high, it varies around 200-300€ (1400-2100₺) a month for a 2 bedroom apartment and the location affects it a lot. A full meal at an ordinary restaurant costs around 4€ (28₺) and in a luxury restaurant around 15€ and you can also eat for a lot cheaper in “dönerci”s.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Istanbul? Is there any advice you can give?

There are many places for rent, but it is hard to find one for a lower price. You can have a look at www.hurriyetemlak.com

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

The food is very good, I definitely recommend Turkish kebab, lokum and other specialties of Turkey.

What places would you recommend visiting in Istanbul?

The historical peninsula for sure: Blue Mosque, Hagia Sophia, Topkapı Museum and Kapalıçarşı(Grand Bazaar). Navy Museum and Istanbul Modern are also go to places. Take a “vapur” for transport between Asia and Europe, Ortaköy is also beautiful with its iconic view: Ortaköy Mosque and Bosphorus.

Is it good to eat out in Istanbul? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

The food is good but it is possible to get poisined by eating seafood from street stands. However I would recommend “Midyeci Ahmet” in Beşiktaş. There is “Tramvay” on Istiklal Avenue for cheap quality food.

Is the nightlife good in Istanbul? Where is good to go?

Yes, the nightlife is pretty enjoyable. There are many clubs all over Istanbul such as Blackk, Ses, Ruby etc.

What advice would you give future students heading to Istanbul?

Enjoy your days in university and have fun! Istanbul is a great option to live a student life.
