What is it like to live in Istanbul? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Incredible. I never got bored, even at the end of my stay I was discovering new places, especially on the Asian side, as I lived on the European side. I Would urge anyone to live there and discover the culture. The city is vibrant, colourful, interesting and has everything you need to make your year a good one. The people don't speak much English but there love foreigners.

What is the student lifestyle like in Istanbul?

Great. Both daytime fun and nighttime fun never get old. It has a good art scene, especially when the art festivals kick in. Without Istiklal the night life wouldn't be the same. It has something for everyone.

How much does it cost to live in Istanbul?

General living costs are quite low. But drinking is very expensive. And certain more Western European foods can be quite expensive. Eating out tends to be cheaper than eating in. So it's quite hard to keep healthy!

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Istanbul? Is there any advice you can give?

No it isn't difficult. I would strongly recommend to avoid student accommodation and find somewhere on craigslist or through word of mouth. Stay in a hostel and ask around and do research until you find somewhere. Erasmus groups are a good way to start and ask around as well. And be careful, the Turks try to rip off foreigners when it comes to accommodation!

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

The food is great. But personally, after a few months there, I needed more variety! If you love lamb, kebabs and gluten, you will love it but unless you want to pay more, it will be quite hard to find anything other than Turkish food. My favorite dishes were a good lahmacun or sis kebab. That said, my favorite food was definitely Turkish Breakfast.

Is it good to eat out in Istanbul? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Yes. Pisi in Besiktas which does amazing breakfasts/brunches. The chocolate or cheese pisi I miss the most. Moda on a sunny afternoon. The shisha bars on the Asian side. Kooporative when there was live music.

Is the nightlife good in Istanbul? Where is good to go?

Papillon for pre drinking. Leyla Terrace, Araf and Kooperative for live music. Pixie for Dub Step in the early hours. Stay away from Beat!

What advice would you give future students headed to Istanbul?

Get to know the locals. Although I would say be cautious with Turkish Men (if your'e female), most of them are lovely but don't think in the same way as Western Men. Even in the heat, respect that you will draw attention to yourself if you under dress. Make sure you see more of Turkey. My favorite place was Hasankeyef in S.E Istanbul. Olympos and Bozcaada are equally worth a visit. Also, it's incredibly easy to hitch hike, so make the most of it! Just read up about how to be safe before hand.
