Erasmus Experience in Istanbul, Turkey by Sarra
Why did you choose to go to Istanbul, Turkey?
To discover a new culture. Indeed, I've been to Sweden, a northern country, and I wanted to discover something different.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
Approximatively 1000€.
What is the student lifestyle like in Istanbul?
It's amazing.
Would you recommend the city and the University of Istanbul to other students?
The University's administration is a bit messy, but the teachers are so nice and helpful.
What is the food like?
The food is very good, but you know not very healthy... (kebap, sucuk).
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Istanbul?
No, I found an announcement with "Skyhousing", and I definitely recommend it because it was cheap, and the flat was great and near the university (10 min by walking).
How much does it cost to live in Istanbul?
I cannot say a price, I don't really know but you can afford it because everything is so cheap (food, transportation), I mean compared to France.
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
Nope. Turkish people don't speak English, they just speak their own language so it's a bit complicated to get yourself understand sometimes, but it's part of the experience. Yes, there are language courses.
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Istanbul from your city?
By plane (Pegasus airline, a Turkish company).
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Istanbul?
In Taksim (European side). In fact, the best part of Istanbul is the European side, so I would advise people to choose their university there.
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Istanbul?
I don't know the names, but there are thousands. Just try them all.
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
Hagia Sophia, of course, and the Blue Mosque just at the opposite: breathtaking. Grand bazar and egyptian bazar. Topkapi. Galata tower and Taksim. Sapphire tower (where you have the best view of the whole city. It's one of the biggest tower in Europe)
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Istanbul in the future?
Don't hesitate to come here because I'm sure you'll fall in love with the city like I did.
