Why did you choose to go to Istanbul, Turkey?

I chose Istanbul, because of the culture and the landscape of the country. It's a city that is so lively and open to foreigners even though they don't speak (many) foreign languages. But the people try which is nice.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

6 months, I received the Erasmus grant and I had savings so each month I had +/- €1200 to spend on all of my expenses so rent, food, etc.

What is the student lifestyle like in Istanbul?

Campus is certainly not cheap. However, there are many places that you can visit and see. Most of the time eating outside is cheaper than at home (depending on the food you're looking for).

Would you recommend the city and the University of Istanbul to other students?

Definitely, but make at least 1 Turkish friend at the uni. To figure out all the cheaper things in terms of food, transportation, sightseeing.

What is the food like?

Diverse. They have a great food app called Yemeksepeti which allows you to order any type of food. Although you will need a translator to understand some of the dishes.

Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Istanbul?

No.

How much does it cost to live in Istanbul?

It depends on how you want to live. I had my own apartment for 6 months with a friend. Because we love our privacy and having our own kitchen and bathroom. If you are ok with living in a shared student apartment it will be much cheaper.

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

Yes, you can follow Turkish for beginners and you have to learn the language a bit to get around. But it is fun and everyone is very helpful.

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Istanbul from your city?

The tram even the taxi isn't that expensive. But watch out only get in a taxi with a logo on the side! Not with only the license plate number on the side of the taxi. Those type of taxi's tend to change the speed of the price calculator of the trip.

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Istanbul?

I would recommend going to Bebek it's near the water high end clubs (very expensive btw) but you also have bars and restaurants.

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Istanbul?

For a amazing dessert or meal go to Mado! A lot of subsidiaries of the restaurant are available in town.

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

Apart from the general visits to the mosques and grand bazar visit the Princess Islands!

Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Istanbul in the future?

Try to learn a some basic Turkish words like where is, Where can I find. Directions left, right, straight ahead. etc.
