Why did you choose to go to Istanbul, Turkey?

I wanted to experience a different culture within Europe. I read many things about the former Constantinople and I wanted to see by myself all those historical places famous and infamous in Turkey. I also wanted to come here as an observer of the very interesting geopolitical situation.

How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?

4 months, as a french student I receive 150€ per months

What is the student lifestyle like in Istanbul?

The bogazici campus is really amazing with an incredible view on the bosphorus. The courses are interesting especially Turkish politics and entrepreneurship. Istanbul is a very cosmopolitan city and it is very enjoyable to go out in bars and clubs. Food, and especially street food, is cheap, what compensates the price of alcohol which is highly taxed. There are many cultural places to see and you will never have the time to do everything in one semester. It is also easy to travel around in Turkey from Istanbul.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Istanbul to other students?

Absolutely

What is the food like?

Cheap and good, from the kofte and the lahmacun to the borek and the durums, there is food for every taste, even for vegetarian people who can easily go to street markets and find tasty vegetables and fruits.

Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Istanbul?

Not at all but it is better if you talk a little bit of Turkish at the beginning in order to find less expensive accommodation.

How much does it cost to live in Istanbul?

Approximately 650 / months including the rent, food, going out and the extra (travelling, hairdresser, cinema...)

Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?

Yes I take turkish lessons, it is kind of hard to learn it but all students are talking english.

What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Istanbul from your city?

Plane

Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Istanbul?

To some pubs in Kadikoy and then to gizli bahçe for a normal night or Babylon if there is a good concert.

And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Istanbul?

There are so many that I still don't have any preferences for the moment.

What good cultural sites are there to visit?

Obviously blue mosque, Haya sophia, topkapi palace, but also beautiful neighborhoods such as fener, balat and also the islands 45mn away by boat from istanbul (especially buyuk ada)
