Erasmus Experience in Istanbul, Turkey by Naledi
Why did you choose to go to Istanbul, Turkey?
Apart from being away from home and living alone, I needed a different scenery. To meet new people and a new environment where I wasn't known.
How long is the scholarship? How much money do you receive to help you with living costs?
It is 4 years and I receive 1280 Turkish lira
What is the student lifestyle like in Istanbul?
It is very different from my country but I always say the student lifestyle is what you create for yourself, be the fun you want to have. Explore the nightlife and see what your preference is
Would you recommend the city and the University of Istanbul to other students?
Yes I would, the world is your oyster
What is the food like?
It has been a challenge for me since I don't eat lamb or beef but I have found bacon and I felt like a kid in a candy store and it was pricey but worth every penny. But my friend says the kebab is to die for, after this is the home of kebabs.
Did it cost you to find your accommodation in Istanbul?
No it didn't since I stay in a dormitory but finding an apartment through and emlak would cost you and some take advantage if you don't speak Turkish, be very careful of that.
How much does it cost to live in Istanbul?
It would cost ± 3500 Turkish lira
Is the language easy to get to grips with? Are there language courses available at the University?
No its not easy and yes every international student has to do Turkish for 2 semesters
What's the easiest or most economical way to travel to Istanbul from your city?
By flight
Where would you recommend to go on a night out in Istanbul?
Taksim or Nisantasi
And for eating? Can you recommend some good restaurants in Istanbul?
Kitchenette in taksim or Ortaköy, tavuk dunyasi, karaköy for breakfast, Midpoint in bebek, kumpir in Ortaköy and some places in Kadiköy, Nurset in Etiler (Salt Bae).
What good cultural sites are there to visit?
All the places in fatih(Sultan Ahmet, Hagia Sophia), Galata Tower, Buyukada, taksim square, all the museums
Is there any other advice that you could give to students going to Istanbul in the future?
The less you expect, the more mind blown you become. There's always something to do in Istanbul, I call it the city that never sleeps.
