Hamburg (Germany) Experience, by Mélina

How is life in Hamburg? Would you recommend this city?

Life there is very pleasant and I would highly recommend this city! In my eyes it is one of the best German cities.

How is student life in Hamburg?

Also very nice, there are a lot of students, a lot of possibilities. You never get bored!

What are prices like there?

A little expensive compared to other German cities. But compared to France it’s less expensive, especially for food.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Hamburg? Have you any advice?

This can be difficult, I advise using the website wg-gesucht. Normally it is quite simple to sublet a room in a flat-share (which avoids lots of administrative bother).

What are the dishes like? What is your favourite?

German food is not the most famous food but there are loads of very nice places with world foods (classic dishes and the latest trends).

Which sites must you visit in Hamburg?

Sternschanze, the neighbourhood of Jungfernsteig, the port and St Pauli and the ships of Alster.

For eating out in Hamburg can you tell us some of your favourite places?

• Falafel Kimo

• Kokomo

• Limu Café

• Krug (a little expensive but perfect for a German meal with fresh produce. A place you’d go with your parents)

• Gaumenganoven

• Marend

How is night-life in Hamburg? Where should you go out?

For drinks out I’d recommend La Sternschanze, the neighbourhood of Ottensen and St Pauli.

What advice would you give to students who are moving to Hamburg soon?

• Take the train with a Schleswig-Holstein Ticket for a day trip to the island of Sylt.

• Wander through the city, drinking a beer (“Wegbier” – drinking this in public is allowed)

• Spend an afternoon at Park Fiction.
