Eating in Granada!
Hello travellers! Today I'm going to write about places to go and eat; whether it be tapas, breakfast or just a snack in Granada so you can enjoy its spectacular food. I lived here for the first two years of my degree and I'll be going back halfway through this year, so if you have any suggestions that I can add to my list upon my return... it would be great if you commented too!
For those from different countries and those who haven't visited a lot of the South, I will explain what "Tapeo" is. "Tapeo" is when you order a drink (normally tinto verano (red wine and lemonade), beer or wine) and the waiter also brings you a little plate of food that could be a "montadito" (a small sandwich) or a small casserole. In some places you can choose them yourself and in others they choose for you, and you pay around €2. 50 for the drink + tapas plate. So usually people order 2 or 3 drinks, and after eating as well, you get quite full. Normally, when you've had about 3 drinks, you then go to the pubs on the street Pedro Antonio de Alarcón. Here I will list my favourite spots.
- Tuntún Restobar: A new restaurant in Granada which specialises in tuna. Honestly, I don't have any problem with this place. The food was 10/10. It's a very modern restaurant with really cool decoration. They serve you tapas that they choose and as I ordered half portions I could only have the Russian salad, which you could mop up with bread and clean the plate. Later we ordered tuna tartare which I love, and some gyozas which are basically Japanese empanadas, which were also great. Calle Moras, 3, 18009 Granada, Spain
- La Cueva de 1900: There are a few of these restaurants throughout the city, and I think there are others in more Andalusian cities such as Málaga. This place isn't one of the cheapest exactly, but they also do small tapas plates at the normal price in Granada, and they usually serve you toasted bread with Iberian cold meats as well. Also they do "cazuelitas de revueltos" (little casseroles with scrambled eggs), "habitas con jamón" (broad beans with ham) and "huevos rotos" (a dish made with fried eggs over potatoes and a variety of other ingredients) for about €4. They also tend to do offers for more than one person. The cave is a tavern that serves Iberian and other meats, and the dishes they serve there are the most traditional of Andalusian grill restaurants. Calle de Pedro Antonio de Alarcón, 20, 18002 Granada, Spain. Calle Reyes Católicos, 13, 18001 Granada, Spain. Calle Reyes Católicos, 42, 18009 Granada, Spain. Torre de la Pólvora, n1, 18008 Granada, Spain. Av. de la Constitución, 39, 18014 Granada, Spain.
- Blanca Paloma: These tapas plates aren't very filling but they really are good. The "cazón en adobo" (battered and fried balls of dogfish) and the "berenjenas con miel" (aubergine with honey) are amazing and as a half portion of "fritura de pescado" (a plate of mixed battered and fried seafood). Plaza Escudo de Carmen, 18001 Granada, Spain
- El Bubión: My FAVOURITE tapas bar. Everything is incredible! Its specialties are the lagrimitas de pollo al limón con mayonesa (chicken strips with lemon and mayonnaise) are amazing and also they do the tasty carne en salsa (meat in sauce literally, usually beef in Granada) and the rest is a traditional bar with the usual montaditos and things. They make some sandwiches for €3 that are really tasty as well. Calle de Sócrates, Granada, Spain
- El Mapa: This is a new bar that opened on Calle Pedro Antonio and it has a small selection of tapas because they had only just started, but they have vegan, vegetarian and gluten free options. They also have a wine list. The pesto pasta and the vegan fajita were so good. We have to believe in young entrepreneurs! Calle Obispo Hurtado, 18, 18002 Granada, Spain
- El Nido de Búho: This is one of the favourite amongst students; great prices with enormous and delicious tapas plates. Calle Dr. Pareja Yébenes, 10, 18012 Granada, Spain
- Bohemia Jazz Café: A spectacular café-come-cocktail-bar. This place has a very overdecorated vintage kind of style, full of books, old magazines, video cases, pianos, with a very dim light. They make cocktails, drinks, coffees, milkshakes and homemade cakes. Plaza de los Lobos, 11, 18002 Granada, Spain
- Bodegas Castañeda: Here, you have to go early if you want a table. A traditional bar where all the waiters shout, the beers and plates get passed over your heads and you never stop ordering another round. The food is spectacular, it's rather expensive in comparison with the usual prices of the city, but it's worth to going at least once. Its distinctive dishes are the Iberian meats and the "tablas frías" or "calientes", which are a variety of tapas prepared for 'X' amount of people served on boards. Ask for "jamón Joselito"... there are no words. Calle Almireceros, 1-3, 18010 Granada, Spain
- Aliatar: Very famous in Granada for its enormous sandwiches and has been open forever! Calle San Sebastian 4, 18001 Granada, Spain
- La Bodega de Vinny: Very low prices with some huge tapas plates and it's all amazing quality. Depending on however many of you there are, the bigger the proportions. The waiter keeps bringing out plates and doesn't stop until you ask for the bill or a digestif. Sol 3, 18002 Granada, Spain, +34 699 11 80 12
- Brasilia: The very best student bar around. They do the biggest and cheapest tapas dishes in styles such as hamburgers, burritos, donuts... Calle Dr. Mesa Moles, 18012 Granada, Spain Plaza de San Lazaro, 9, local 1, 18012 Granada, Spain
- El Rincón de Rodri: The best place to eat incredibly fresh fish on enormous tapas plates. You have to get here very early if you want to find a place to sit, although it's a totally Andalusian atmosphere anyway. They bring you tapas that they choose but if you don't like it, they'll change it for you. On Saturdays and Sundays at midday, they make paellas and "gulas" which are a type of tiny thin fish. Calle Músico Vicente Zarzo, 3, 18002 Granada, Spain
- Los Diamantes: In the same style as Rodri's but it's more famous and the food is served in smaller quantities. The paella they do on the weekend is magnificent. Plaza Nueva, 13, 18009 Granada, Spain
- Monasterio Chill Out San Jerónimo:: The views you can see from there of the sunset are very impressive. This terrace is closed off in a hotel where they serve cocktails, milkshakes and coffees and also crepes, waffles... Calle San Juan de Dios, 3, 18002 Granada, Spain
- El Establo: A very student orientated atmosphere as well but it's a long-standing bar for its "Triquini" (a highly recommended sandwich). Calle Almona Vieja, 5, 18002 Granada, Spain
- Bar Babel World Fusión: This is only of the international and Erasmus bars in Granada. It has an incredible atmosphere where you can see all types of people. It's a combination of hipsters, hippies, students, posh people, artists and foreigners. They have a very large wine list and the menu sometimes changes but in general they has exotic tapas dishes from different parts of the world such as cous cous, noodles, sushi, burritos... It also has vegan options. Calle Elvira, 41, 18010 Granada, Spain
- D´Platos Centro: Very tasty and elaborate tapas dishes at a good price. The make a delectable risotto. C/Acera del Darro, 92, 18005 Granada, Spain
- Bar Pöe: It's tiny and similar to Babel, with exotic dishes and very cheap prices. The owner is foreign and there is a wide variety of food. It also has vegetarian options too. Calle Verónica de la Magdalena, 40, 18002 Granada, Spain
- Lemon Rock Bar & Hostel: It's a very alternative Hostel-Café-Bar with an industrial vintage design, you could say that this is the hipster spot in Granada. It's atmosphere is truly amazing, there are all types of people there and usually they're the type to do activities like Yoga, fashion shows or tandems. The food is really good. Calle Montalbán, 6, 18002 Granada, Spain
- El Peruano: This place is next to the Science Department, and you cannot leave without trying the "carne en salsa". The rest of the tapas is pretty traditional and the prices and sizes are very good. Severo Ochoa, s/n, 18071 Granada, Spain
- Saint Germain: A very tiny bar with an extensive wine list and some "tostas" which are amazing. The prices are great and you could say that the food is of a 'delicatessen' style. Calle Postigo Velutti 4, 18001 Granada, Spain
- Pollo Fresco: You will never forget these nights, flying out of the club with an obligatory stop before going home to eat the best kebab in the city. Be careful though as they also opened one in front of it called Nuevo Pollo Fresco but it's not the same. Calle Pedro Antonio de Alarcón, 67, 18002 Granada, Spain
- La Fábula: This place is one of the best restaurants in Granada, it's quite luxurious. Companies and businesses tend to have dinners here or people book in for special dates/occasions. The food is delicious but you have to understand that the plates are based on their design, which means small quantities. SAN ANTÓN 28 C. P. 18005 GRANADA, 18005 Granada, Spain
- Siete Gatos: Cafe-Bar with really good quantities although the prices are a little bit more expensive than usual. They have elaborated tapas plates but they do all types of stuffed tortilla. The breakfasts are enormous. Carril del Picón, 22, 18002 Granada, Spain
- Los Manueles: One of the oldest and most successful bars in Granada, its specialities are giant croquettes and the sausages in wine. C/ Reyes Católicos, 61, 18009 Granada, Spain
