Experience in Gdansk, Poland by Alicja
What is it like to live in Gdansk? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?
I would for sure recommend it to other people. The city is located near the Baltic sea and also is close to two other cities - Sopot and Gdynia. Together it is called 3city - because all these cities are close to each other. Gdansk though in my opinion is the best one with its history & lots of amazing small places worth to see.
What is the student lifestyle like in Gdansk?
Going out with friends to some new small locals in Gdansk Centre, partying in Sopot and going out (not only but also) to the beach in Gdynia. It is kind of like living in 3 cities at once.
How much does it cost to live in Gdansk?
Renting a flat or room in Gdansk isn’t cheap. It is as expensive as in the capital city of Poland - Warsaw. The room can cost you more or less 800-1200 polish zloty, depending on when you start looking for it/what you find.
Is it difficult to find accommodation in Gdansk? Is there any advice you can give?
The best way to find accomodation in Gdansk is to have some friend from Poland that can help you search for it - because I do know noone is actually studying polish. When polish people see someone from foreign country who wants to rent a flat/room they would think the clients (students from other countries) have more money and might ask more for it. The best offers of different kind of flats are on facebook in groups called “rent a flat in 3city” and so on (obviously each of this offers is in polish, same as the title of the group on facebook. Thats why it is good to have someone who can help you out)
What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?
The typical polish dishes are heavy so while a lot of people do like it, I don't recommend them. The best dishes for me are pancakes (there is a restaurant called Manekin which is popular, inside the restaurant you could assume it is really expensive one but it is not, it can cost you 4euro to order huge pancake and eat it in restaurant and you will for sure be full). Also you have to try dumplings which is typical polish dish.
What places would you recommend visiting in Gdansk?
For sure whole old city that is located in centre, the city has a lot to offer, there are a lot of amazing places by the river Motlawa there and it has amazing atmosphere. In addition you obviously have to see Gdynia and its beaches and Sopot for parties.
The picture presents the street Długa in the centre of the Gdańsk.
Both pictures present the river Motława located in the old centre of Gdańsk.
Is it good to eat out in Gdansk? Can you tell us your favourite spots?
My favorite spot is Manekin, the restaurant located near University of Gdansk. It is really elegant, looks like expensive restaurant but you can eat for 4-5euro. In addition you have lots of amazing small reataurants in the centre that are worth seeing.
Is the nightlife good in Gdansk? Where is good to go?
If you want to drink a beer by the river I advise to Gdansk. There is also a place called street Elektrykow and 100cznia where a lot of students are nowadays going. It is located 10minutes by walk from the centre. You can buy there beer or drink and something to eat and enjoy a live concert or just talk with friends or watch a movie on screen with others also there! If you want hardcore party though - then you should go to Sopot.
Sopot is located near the beach.
What advice would you give future students heading to Gdansk?
If you are coming in winter take a lot of warm clothes, you will for sure need it. I advise to come on summer though!
