What is it like to live in Gdansk? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

Gdańsk is an amazing city. It has a beautiful old town which is located by the Motława river. It has also access to the beach and the sea. It is a dynamic city with loads of things to do.

What is the student lifestyle like in Gdansk?

It is really nice. There are many things going on in the city, a lot of parties and places to see.

How much does it cost to live in Gdansk?

It depends on your spendings and how much you control them. Transport and accommodation are really cheap. Food and going out are also cheap comparing to prices in western Europe.

Is it difficult to find accommodation in Gdansk? Is there any advice you can give?

It is easy. There are websites for foreign students with accommodation places. Each university has student halls, which you can ask your university about (very cheap). Also there are facebook groups from universities where you can find info. There is trojmiasto.pl website but it's in polish - you can use Google translate though and the phone, a lot of polish people speak English to some extend.

What is the food like? What are your favourite dishes?

Polish cousine is really good. My favourite dishes are pierogi, kotlet devoille (chicken breast stuffed with butter or cheese and mushrooms), schabowy, potato pancakes (placki ziemniaczane).

What places would you recommend visiting in Gdansk?

The old town, beach in Jelitkowo, fortification, museum of Solidarność. Sopot and Gdynia which are cities nearby (10-20 min by train).

Is it good to eat out in Gdansk? Can you tell us your favourite spots?

Food in Poland is extremely good and delicious. Most of the places are really good. There is a lot of foreign cousine, but when it comes to the local one I would recommend Mandu (pierogi), Manekin (pancakes), Pyrabar (potatoe pancakes and potatoes). I really like Harcówka it is not the most fancy, but it has the most delicious and traditional polish meals.

There are many to chose from!

Is the nightlife good in Gdansk? Where is good to go?

There are a lot of parties. You have an overwhelming choice of clubs and pubs. Sopot, the nightlife center of whole Tricity, is 20 min away by train. I would recommend EGO and Czekolada in Sopot for more international climate parties with remix music. But Kwadratowa and Bunkier if you want to go to the party where the songs that everyone knows are played. It depends on your taste- but there is something for everyone.

What advice would you give future students heading to Gdansk?

Open yourself for meeting new people. Don't stay in closed groups, you will miss a lot of fun if you do. Polish people are really open for foreigners and we love to speak to them and have fun together. If you are invited to drink vodka with polish people you are already their friend.
