Experience in Gdansk, Poland by Adán

What is it like to live in Gdansk? Would you recommend it? What is the city like?

It's a nice city for foreigners, some of my professors (from Spain) live in Gdansk and they like it there.

What is the student lifestyle in Gdansk?

The students are open. They like Spanish people and a lot of people want to study.

How much does it cost to live in Gdansk?

Unfortunately, quite a lot. Students (each person) has to spend quite a lot/ It depends on which part of Gdansk you're in, but the prices start at about €250 and go up to €400. The most expensive area is Sopot. If you're more than just one person, it's less expensive, of course. You also have to pay a deposit (which costs as much as the accommodation, more or less) and they'll give it back to you when you move out.

Was it difficult to find accommodation in Gdansk? Do you have any advice?

Luckily, I'm Polish and I stayed at my family's place. I think there are a lot of places, but it's all a question of the price.

What is the food like there? What are some of your favourite dishes?

The food is amazing. My professor there, a man from Andalusia, likes the Polish soup Żurek. I've heard that Polish food goes down well with a lot of foreigners.

Where would you recommend to visit in Gdansk?

The old centre is marvellous.

And to eat in Gdansk? What are some of your favourite places to go?

It's really worth going to the Manhattan shopping centre (there's one in the city centre, close to the central station and another in Gdansk Wrzeszcz). Other than that, the Galeria Bałtycka (a shopping centre) in Gdansk Wrzeszcz. There are a lot of places near the central station.

There's also the Manekin, a pub/bar which is connected to the University of Gdansk, where they serve food and drinks at a reasonable price.

Where would you recommend for a night out in Gdansk?

There are a lot of bars near the schools. It's cheaper for students. I've heard my friends talk about the Parlamento (a bar in the old centre), also there's the Bunkier and the Ucho (in the centre).

Do you have any advice for students coming to Gdansk in the future?

Nothing springs to mind :)
