Why did you decide to go to Gdansk?

Because I wanted a fully immersive experience in a culture that was totally different from my own.

How long was your scholarship? How much grant money did you receive?

It depends on your home university and your region. I study in Genoa, Italy, and the maximum scholarship length is 7 months, €233 a month. If you're in a low income bracket you can receive a supplement, which brings the total grant to €470.

How was student life in Gdansk?

It depends on the university. I study at Politechnika, which is organised very differently from my home university. For example, the subject matter of their modules can be less complicated than those of the University of Genoa, but the way in which it's taught is totally different. The lessons are dynamic and involve a lot of group work and many projects, this is in addition to final exams.

Homework is also assigned on a weekly basis. Some professors are very strict, e. g. for some subjects you can't take the exam if you have more than 2 absences. Their English is good, and all the Polish students speak it well too. At first there is little interaction, but they are actually very nice.

Would you recommend the city and the University of Gdansk to other students?

Every experience is subjective and different for every individual. Being open-minded is good. Danzica is lovely, and with regards to the university I was satisfied.

What’s the food like in Poland?

It's nothing compared to Italian food. As with all cuisine, there are some great Polish dishes, but in general it was not my cup of tea.

Was it difficult finding accommodation in Gdansk?

It wasn't easy. After 2 weeks I had to compromise (shared bedroom etc. ), but I was lucky.

Does it cost much to live in Gdansk?

My rent was 700 PLN a month with 100-200 PLN in additional expenses (about €200 in total). It is very cheap to live there, as Polish Zloty have the same spending power as Euros, but are worth more or less 1/4.

Bergamo-Danzica with Wizzair.

Any advice you want to give to future students going to Gdansk?

Gdansk is the place to go if you want an intense Erasmus experience.
