The brewery of the true Düsseldorfer

There is a great beer culture in Düsseldorf, it must be rigorously Alt (old) and produced in the city. Alt beer from other cities, such as Cologne's Kölsch, should not even be named. The Alt is always served in a 200 ml glass and costs € 2, that is why waiters could even mock you if you do not drink at least three beers.

In the city, precisely in the old town or Altstadt, there are seven breweries! In the Hausbrauereien you only (or almost only) drink Altbier, so if beer is not your cup of tea, you'll have least to do. It is also possible to eat traditional dishes there, like pork shank or Mettbrötchen, a sandwich with meat tartare and onion.

The less touristy brewery and the most frequented by people from Düsseldorf is Kürzer, located in Altstadt on Kürze Straße, in a less busy street.

The atmosphere is very informal, it looks more like a pub than a German brewery, it does not seem traditional at all. It is essentially split into two rooms: one where you can also eat and the other that is only a brewery.

Despite being the less traditional brewery, it's always packed, especially by young people on the weekend, when they often play rock, punk and metal music.

Bartenders here are more friendly and welcoming than in other breweries, for example, at Uerige. They can make fun of you if you only drink one Alt glass, but they surely do not do it to be mean. As soon as you finish drinking your glass, they immediately bring you another one, it works like this. But if you do not want to drink anymore, just put the coaster on top of your glass.
